Since his 2020 election Hanotin has invested heavily in video surveillance, increasing the number of cameras in the city to 450 at a total cost of €6.7 million. In 2024 he introduced an algorithmic video surveillance system using artificial intelligence to analyse behaviour in public spaces; the project was announced without prior public consultation or deliberation. The chosen software reportedly allows real-time monitoring and analysis of various behaviours via biometric filters, although their use is limited by French law.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.streetpress.com/sujet/1730128027-mairie-saint-denis-mathieu-hanotin-video-surveillance-algorithmique-logiciel-cameras-technologie-intelligence-artificielle|title=Sans demander, la mairie de Saint-Denis a imposé la vidéosurveillance algorithmique dans la ville|last1=Jusquiame|first1=Thomas|publisher=StreetPress|date=28 October 2024|accessdate=13 August 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.mediapart.fr/journal/france/300724/en-catimini-saint-denis-achete-un-logiciel-de-surveillance-algorithmique|title=En catimini, Saint-Denis achète un logiciel de surveillance algorithmique|last1=Le Foll|first1=Clément|publisher=Mediapart|date=30 July 2024|accessdate=13 August 2025}}</ref>
