Since his parents were very busy, he was brought up mainly by his grandparents. His childhood was untroubled and he spent a good part of his time playing football with his friends.<ref name="RFI">[http://www.rfimusic.com/artist/chanson/marka/biography Biography on RFI Music website.] Retrieved 4 February 2016.</ref> He was given the nickname Markassou by an African friend and it was later shortened to Marka.<ref name="RFI"/><ref>Markassou is said to mean "little African tiger", but is also reminiscent of [http://www.marcassou.be/ Marcassou], a brand of Ardenne sausage.
