'''Marcelo Coelho''' is a Brazilian American computation artist and designer. His work focuses on the boundaries between matter and computation, and includes interactive installations, photography, wearables, and robotics. Coelho is currently an Associate Professor of the Practice at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning and Director at MIT's Design Intelligence Lab, a research lab inventing new forms of expression and collaboration between human and machine intelligence.

Marcelo Coelho graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Computation Arts, and received a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the MIT Media Lab.<ref>{{cite thesis |author=Coelho, Marcelo |date=September 2008 |degree=Master |title=Materials of Interaction: responsive materials in the design of transformable interactive surfaces |publisher=Massachusetts Institute of Technology |hdl = 1721.1/46577 |hdl-access=free}}</ref><ref>{{cite thesis |degree=PhD |author=Coelho, Marcelo |date=September 2012 |title=Materializing Interaction |publisher=Massachusetts Institute of Technology |hdl = 1721.1/79305 |hdl-access=free}}</ref>

==Works== Coelho makes objects, installations, and live experiences that challenges people's perception of material properties and behaviors.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.coolhunting.com/design/marcelo-coelho |title=Marcelo Coelho: Stunning Explorations in physical interface design from an MIT Media Lab student |publisher=Cool Hunting |last=Killeen |first=Meghan|date=May 19, 2011 }}</ref> Many of his works use techniques and concepts from composites, digital fabrication and programmable matter.

Large Language Objects (LLO) are physical interfaces that embed large language models into real-world objects with applications in music, storytelling, play and communication.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Coelho |first1=Marcelo |last2=Labrune |first2=Jean-Baptiste |date=2024-06-26 |title=Large Language Objects: The Design of Physical AI and Generative Experiences |url=https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3672534 |journal=Interactions |volume=31 |issue=4 |pages=43–48 |doi=10.1145/3672534 |issn=1072-5520|url-access=subscription |hdl=1721.1/155549 |hdl-access=free }}</ref>

Six-Forty by Four-Eighty, a 2010 installation by Coelho, uses interactive physical pixels and body communication to convey an immersive digital graffiti experience.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://howtospendit.ft.com/art/2818-thats-a-beautiful-code |title=That's a beautiful code |newspaper=Financial Times}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |url=https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/art-and-architecture/playtime-technology-advances-are-a-marvel-for-kids-and-grown-ups-alike/article23313630/ |title=Digital play exhibition offers marvels for kids and grown-ups alike |newspaper=The Globe and Mail}}</ref>

For the 2016 Summer Paralympics opening ceremony, Coelho created an audiovisual performance of 400 dancers equipped with illuminated walking sticks to form a large-scale 2.5-dimensional display.<ref>{{cite journal |title=Crowd-Driven Pattern Formation: Computational Strategies for Large-Scale Design and Assembly |journal=Architectural Design|volume=87|issue=4|pages=50–59|doi=10.1002/ad.2195 |year = 2017|last1 = Coelho|first1 = Marcelo|last2=Grossman|first2=Tovi|hdl=1721.1/132939 |hdl-access=free}}</ref>

In Sandcastles, Coelho collaborated with artist Vik Muniz to etch drawings of castles originally created with a camera lucida onto grains of sand, using a focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope. <ref>{{cite magazine |url=https://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-03/31/sandcastles |title=Microscopic castles etched onto grains of sand |magazine=Wired UK |publisher=Wired.co.uk}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/creating-sand-castles-with-a-single-grain-of-sand/ |title=Creating Sand Castles With A Single Grain Of Sand |date=March 27, 2014 |publisher=The Creators Project}}</ref>

In Hyperform, Coelho developed a chandelier that is assembled from a single 3D printed chain, and where the assembly information is encoded in the material itself.<ref>{{cite magazine |url=http://www.fastcodesign.com/3017569/a-chandelier-that-can-practically-assemble-itself |title=A Chandelier That Can Practically Assemble Itself |magazine=Fast Company}}</ref>

==Awards and Exhibits== Coelho's work has been exhibited at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Design Miami in Basel, Switzerland, and the Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, England.

Coelho's work has won awards including the Vida 16<ref>{{cite web |url=http://vida.fundaciontelefonica.com/en/project/pulse/ |title=Premiados VIDA 16.0 |publisher=Telefonica Fundacion}}</ref> award from Fundacion Telefónica, the Designer of the Future Award from Design Miami,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.dezeen.com/2010/06/25/designers-of-the-future-at-design-miamibasel-2010/ |title=W Hotels Designers of the Future at Design Miami/Basel 2010 |date=June 25, 2010 |publisher=Dezeen Magazine}}</ref> an Honorary Mention for Interactive Art <ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.ok-centrum.at/?q=en/content/presse/ok-cyberarts-11-prix |title=CYBERARTS 11: Prix Ars Electronica Exhibition |publisher=Offenes Kulturhaus |access-date=March 24, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304032224/http://www.ok-centrum.at/?q=en%2Fcontent%2Fpresse%2Fok-cyberarts-11-prix |archive-date=March 4, 2016 }}</ref> and [the next idea] voestalpine Art and Technology Grant<ref>{{cite magazine |url=https://www.wired.com/2013/05/winners-of-the-ars-electronica-prize-2013/ |title=Winners of the Ars Electronica prize 2013 |magazine=Wired |last=Sterling |first=Bruce}}</ref> from Ars Electronica.
