It is also found in the Suez Canal in Egypt.<ref name=IUCN/><ref name=FishBase/> It occurs in marine and brackish waters on sandy substrates in shallow waters, typically down to {{convert|20|m|ft|abbr=on}}, but occasionally to {{convert|70|m|ft|abbr=on}} in the winter.<ref name=IUCN/><ref name=FishBase/> It can reach a length of {{convert|8|cm|in|abbr=on}} TL though most do not exceed {{convert|5|cm|in}} TL.<ref name=FishBase/>
