'''Manufahi''' ({{Langx|pt|Município Manufahi}}, {{Langx|tet|Munisípiu Manufahi}}) is one of the municipalities of Timor-Leste. It has a population of 53,691 (2015 census) and an area of 1,323 km2.<ref name="SR2015">{{Cite web |url=http://www.statistics.gov.tl/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/1_2015-V4-Households-Population-by-5-year-age-group.xls |title=Timor-Leste Population And Housing Census 2015 |access-date=2018-02-16 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161231161557/http://www.statistics.gov.tl/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/1_2015-V4-Households-Population-by-5-year-age-group.xls |archive-date=2016-12-31 |url-status=bot: unknown }}</ref> The capital of the municipality is Same.<ref>{{cite book|author=Lansell Taudevin|title=East Timor: Too Little Too Late|year=1999|publisher=Duffy & Snellgrove|isbn=18-759-8963-3}}</ref>
==Toponymy== The municipality's current name, ''Manufahi'', is said to be derived from ''Maun Fahe'', the Tetum language expression for 'divided brothers'. According to legend, there was a fight between two related tribes, or a group of siblings. Eventually, the protagonists agreed to subject themselves to a single ruler.<ref name="mf toponymy">{{cite web |title=Perfil: 2. Toponímia |trans-title=Profile: 2. During the Portuguese colonial era, the then district bore the name of its main town, Same. The present name was adopted on the basis of the divided brothers legend.<ref name="mf toponymy"/><ref name="alongi 2012"/>{{rp|67}} However, it was misspelled, and the Tetum language meaning of the misspelled name is 'pig chicken'.<ref name="mf toponymy"/>
Efforts are being made to correct the name. However, there is another legend that in the ''suco'' of {{ill|Daisula|de|Dai-Sua}} a rooster once flew down from a mountain, landed on the back of a pig, and then travelled with the pig to many places before returning home.<ref name="mf toponymy"/>
==Geography== Manufahi extends from the central highlands of Timor-Leste to its south coast, on the Timor Sea.<ref name="alongi 2012"/>{{rp|67}} It is bordered by Manatuto to the east, Ainaro to the west, and Aileu to the north.

==History== According to a list prepared by {{ill|Afonso de Castro (colonial administrator)|de|Afonso de Castro|lt=Afonso de Castro}}, governor of the colony of Portuguese Timor from 1859 to 1863, Manufahi was one of 47 kingdoms in that colony at the time.<ref name="amoc timor loro sae">{{cite web |author1=<!--not stated--> |title=Timor Loro Sae: Um pouco de história |trans-title=Timor Loro Sae: A little history |url=http://oecussi.no.sapo.pt/HistoriaTimor.htm |website=A.M.O.C. - Associação dos Militares do Oecussi |access-date=12 January 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20011113185808/http://oecussi.no.sapo.pt/HistoriaTimor.htm |archive-date=13 November 2001 |language=pt |url-status=dead}}</ref>
During its time as a Portuguese colony, the municipality was called '''Same''', after the capital city. It was the epicentre of the Great Rebellion of 1910–12. During the Indonesian occupation the then subdistrict of Hato-Udo was split off from the then district of Manufahi and joined to Ainaro, and the then subdistrict of Turiscai, previously in Ainaro, was moved to Manufahi. ==Administrative posts== Manufahi's administrative posts (formerly sub-districts) are:<ref>{{HD of East Timor|title=Manufahi District|page=124–125}}</ref> *Alas *Fatuberlio *Same *Turiscai
==Demographics== Besides the national official languages of Tetum and Portuguese, the Malayo-Polynesian language Mambai is also spoken. <!--
