==Proposal== Manchester Airport is the busiest airport in the UK outside London and offers more destinations than any other British airport. An airport station was recommended by local authorities during the consultation stage.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Council chiefs lobby ministers for TWO high speed rail stations |url=http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/trafford-council-chiefs-lobby-ministers-1230363 |newspaper=Manchester Evening News |date=22 January 2013 |access-date=2013-01-27 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130518065740/http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/trafford-council-chiefs-lobby-ministers-1230363 |archive-date=18 May 2013 }}</ref><ref name="manchub">{{Cite news|title=Manchester Airport may be high-speed rail network hub |url=http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/transport/s/1410661_manchester_airport_may_be_highspeed_rail_network_hub |newspaper=Manchester Evening News |date=13 March 2011 |access-date=11 March 2012 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110316215516/http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/transport/s/1410661_manchester_airport_may_be_highspeed_rail_network_hub |archive-date=16 March 2011 }}</ref> The government agreed in January 2013 for an airport station, but only on the basis that private investment was involved, such as funding from the Manchester Airports Group to build the station. In 2020, revised plans were released that saw the number of platforms increased from two to four.<ref name="2020 proposals">{{Cite web|date=2020-10-08|title=HS2 Ltd Launches Public Consultation on Proposed Changes to Phase 2b|url=https://railway-news.com/hs2-ltd-launches-public-consultation-on-proposed-changes-to-phase-2b/|access-date=2020-12-15|website=Railway-News}}</ref>
The proposed HS2 connection to the station was officially abandoned when the United Kingdom government under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced the cancellation of the Manchester leg of High Speed 2 on 4 October 2023.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/live-hs2-rishi-sunak-manchester-27837525 | title=LIVE: HS2 Manchester link cancelled by Rishi Sunak - updates and reaction | date=4 October 2023 }}</ref>
Had the HS2 connection been built, journey times from London Euston to Manchester Airport would have been estimated at between 59{{nbsp}}minutes and 63{{nbsp}}minutes, with Birmingham Airport just 28 minutes away.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/568369/hs2-phase-2b-sobc-economic-case.pdf |title=High Speed Two Phase 2b Strategic Outline Business Case Economic Case |page=32}}</ref><ref name="guardian-hs2-journey-times">{{cite web|last1=Arnett|first1=George|title=How will HS2 change journey times to and from London?|url=https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2014/mar/17/hs2-change-journey-times-london|website=The Guardian|access-date=18 December 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171218110527/https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2014/mar/17/hs2-change-journey-times-london|archive-date=18 December 2017|date=17 March 2014|url-status=live}}</ref> Additionally, the high speed service would have been less than 10{{nbsp}}minutes from Manchester Piccadilly to the airport – down from 15{{nbsp}}minutes at present on the congested Styal Line which is used by a mix of commuter, express and freight services and susceptible to delays. However, whilst the proposed station is closer to terminal 2 than the existing station, passengers using terminals 1 & 3 would be required to use the tram or a shuttle bus to get to the station from the airport.

Before the High Speed 2 connection was cancelled, extant proposals did not detail passenger interchange facilities, but indicated that various options were being considered to integrate the station with existing transport networks, including extending the Manchester Metrolink tram line to serve the HS2 station directly.<ref name="manc-airport-2013">{{cite web|title=Manchester Airport High Speed Station|url=https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/382000/HS2_Phase_Two_Manchester_Airport_High_Speed_station_factsheet.pdf|website=UK Government website|publisher=High Speed Two (HS2) Limited|access-date=18 December 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171218104221/https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/382000/HS2_Phase_Two_Manchester_Airport_High_Speed_station_factsheet.pdf|archive-date=18 December 2017|date=2013|url-status=live}}</ref><ref name="HSR-manchester-interchange">{{cite book|author1=Department for Transport|author-link1=Department for Transport|title=High Speed Rail: Investing in Britain's Future – Phase Two, the Route to Leeds, Manchester and Beyond|date=2013|publisher=The Stationery Office|isbn=9780101850827|page=38|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=sOfRI8yd2-gC&q=Manchester%20Airport%20HS2%20station%20interchange&pg=PA38|access-date=18 December 2017|language=en}}</ref>
Transport for Greater Manchester had proposed that the Metrolink Airport Line — which currently terminates at Manchester Airport station — be extended via a new "western loop" around Wythenshawe. This proposed tram line which would cross the M56 motorway via the Thorley Lane Bridge, with an HS2 interchange stop at Davenport Green, before looping around via Wythenshawe Hospital. Local politicians have begun lobbying central government for political support for this extension scheme, which is currently unfunded.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-29842268|title=Wythenshawe 'western loop' Metrolink tram line to be proposed|work=BBC News|access-date=20 November 2015|date=31 October 2014}}</ref>
Revised proposals published in 2020 include provision for an east-west tram line that serves this station.<ref name="2020 proposals" />
==Services== <!-- linked from redirect Manchester Interchange Metrolink Station --> Service proposals prior to the cancellation of the HS2 connection would have seen five trains per hour north to Manchester Piccadilly, three trains per hour south to Old Oak Common and London Euston (one service additionally calls at Birmingham Interchange), and two trains south to Birmingham Curzon Street.
The station is also planned to be an intermediate stop on the proposed Northern Powerhouse Rail line. {{Adjacent stations|noclear=y |hide-system1=y|system1=Manchester Metrolink |header2=Future services {{rail line |previous=Birmingham Curzon Street or Birmingham Interchange or Old Oak Common|next={{rws|Manchester Piccadilly}}|route=Avanti West Coast<br>High Speed 2 |col={{AWC colour}} }} {{rail line|previous={{rws|Warrington Bank Quay}}|next={{rws|Manchester Piccadilly}}|route=TBA<br>Northern Powerhouse Rail|col={{temporary rail colour}} }} |system3=Manchester Metrolink |line3=Manchester Airport|left3=Davenport Green|right3=Newall Green|to-left3=Cornbrook|to-right3=Roundthorn }}
