'''Luca Antonini ''' ({{IPA|it|ˈluːka antoˈniːni}}; born 4 August 1982) is an Italian former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is best known for his five seasons with AC Milan, for which he played from 2008 until 2013. During that time, he made 111 appearances for the club in all competitions, scored one goal, and won the 2010–11 Serie A as the team's starting left back.

== Club career ==

=== Early career === Antonini started his career at Milan, originally as a winger, playing for 11 years in their youth teams.<ref name="Interview">{{cite news |title=Milan, Luca Antonini: il ritorno a casa di un rossonero doc |url=http://www.calcioblog.it/post/6010/milan-luca-antonini-il-ritorno-a-casa-di-un-rossonero-doc |author=Luca Rosato |work=calcioblog.it |date=6 November 2008 |accessdate=10 February 2010 |language=Italian}}</ref> At the start of the 2001–02 season, he was loaned out to Serie C2 side Prato, where he made his professional debut, totalling 26 appearances and scoring 3 goals.<ref name="Profile">{{cite web |title=Luca Antonini |url=http://www.acmilan.com/LM_Actor.aspx?idSquadra=3&idStagione=17&idPersona=448&name=Antonini%20Luca |work=acmilan.com |publisher=Associazione Calcio Milan |accessdate=10 February 2010 }}{{Dead link|date=September 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref> The following year, he made 17 appearances and scored one goal in his first Serie B season, during a loan spell at Ancona.<ref name="Profile"/> The team got promoted to Serie A and Antonini's contribution was significant, as he became a regular in the second half of the season.<ref>A list of the league games played by Antonini that season can be found [http://aic.football.it/dettaglio/18054/17986/18066/18081/18086/18105/18036/18106/18117/18126/18136/18153/18156/18174/18176/18186/18197/=1818054|17986|18066|18081|18086|18105|18036|18106|18117|18126|18136|18153|18156|18174|18176|18186|18197 here].</ref>

=== Sampdoria (2003–2004) === In June 2003 he moved to Sampdoria in a co-ownership deal with the ''Rossoneri'',<ref>{{cite news |title=Chievo costretto a cedere Roma e Inter all' attacco |url=http://archiviostorico.corriere.it/2003/giugno/17/Chievo_costretto_cedere_Roma_Inter_co_0_030617132.shtml |author=Luca Valdiserri |newspaper=Corriere della Sera |date=17 June 2003 |accessdate=10 February 2010 |language=Italian}}</ref> for 2 million. However, he made his Serie A debut on 14 December, in an away match against Perugia.<ref name="Profile"/>

=== Various loan spells (2004–2007) === The following season, he returned to play in Serie B, being first loaned out to Modena and then switching, during the January transfer window, to Pescara. Still seeking more playing time, for the 2005–06 season he moved to Arezzo on another loan spell, where he finally managed to play regularly throughout the whole season, making 39 appearances and scoring 3 goals.<ref>{{cite news|title=New faces, friendly faces |url=http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=69024 |work=acmilan.com |publisher=Associazione Calcio Milan |date=13 July 2008 |accessdate=10 February 2010 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080814021559/http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=69024 |archivedate=14 August 2008 }}</ref>

At the beginning of the 2006–07 season, the then 24-year-old midfielder was sent to Siena on a fourth consecutive loan spell and faced his second Serie A season, which proved much more successful than the first one. He made 32 appearances and scored 3 goals.<ref name="Profile"/> In particular, his very first goal in the top-tier came on 26 November, in a home game against Fiorentina.<ref>{{cite web |title=Siena vs. Fiorentina – 26 November 2006 |url=https://int.soccerway.com/matches/2006/11/26/italy/serie-a/ac-siena/acf-fiorentina/403590/ |work=soccerway.com |date=26 November 2006 |accessdate=10 February 2010}}</ref>

=== Empoli (2007–2008) === Prior to the start of the 2007–08 season, Milan reclaimed Antonini for €1 million and sent him to Empoli also for €1 million, along with his future teammate Ignazio Abate (the 50% valued €0.9 million), in a new co-ownership deal.<ref>[http://www.bilanciomilan.it/2007/HTML/PDF/bilancio.pdf AC Milan Spa 2007 Annual Report] {{webarchive|url=https://www.webcitation.org/5yCT561UV?url=http://www.bilanciomilan.it/2007/HTML/PDF/bilancio.pdf |date=25 April 2011 }} {{in lang|it}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |title=Co-ownerships resolved |url=http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=48667 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160630192723/http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=48667 |url-status=dead |archive-date=30 June 2016 |work=acmilan.com |publisher=Associazione Calcio Milan |date=20 July 2007 |accessdate=10 February 2010}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |title=Empoli raid Rossoneri for trio |url=https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/01c2-0e6e53eab919-d1d650842e81-1000--empoli-raid-rossoneri-for-trio/ |work=UEFA |publisher=Union of European Football Associations |date=28 June 2007 |access-date=6 February 2010}}</ref> With Empoli, Antonini made his debut in European competitions on 20 September 2007, in a UEFA Cup first-round game against Zürich, also scoring a penalty.<ref>{{cite web |title=Empoli vs FC Zürich in UEFA Cup 2007/2008 |url=http://www.football-lineups.com/match/13410/ |work=football-lineups.com |date=20 September 2007 |accessdate=6 February 2010}}</ref> Despite the team being relegated, he had an extremely good season, also showing versatility when coach Alberto Malesani started to employ him as a full-back.<ref name="Interview"/>

Milan in 2012 In his first season with the ''Rossoneri'', he did not get much playing time though, making only 11 league appearances. For the 2009–10 campaign, Milan signed a new head coach Leonardo, who initially did not seem to take Antonini into much consideration. However, as the season progressed, injuries to first-string players such as Zambrotta and Jankulovski prompted the Brazilian to put him in the line-up. Antonini seized his chance and earned Leonardo's trust by constantly performing well.<ref>{{cite news |title=Leonardo: "Antonini e Abate, una crescita che mi fa felice" |url=http://archiviostorico.gazzetta.it/2009/dicembre/08/Leonardo_Antonini_Abate_una_crescita_ga_10_091208019.shtml |author=Olivero Giovanni Battista |newspaper=La Gazzetta dello Sport |date=8 December 2009 |accessdate=10 February 2010 |language=Italian}}</ref>

When new coach Massimiliano Allegri was appointed in the summer of 2010, he kept Antonini at the left-back position and Luca was a regular in the starting XI for the whole of the 2010–11 season, helping Milan win their 18th Scudetto. He continued to be a regular for the 2011–12 season, where Milan disappointingly finished second to Juventus but managed to win the Supercoppa Italiana in the summer of 2011.

=== Genoa (2013–2015) === At the start of the 2013–14 season, Antonini left Milan to join Genoa as part of a deal which saw midfielder Valter Birsa move the other way.<ref>{{cite news|title=Antonini al Genoa, Birsa al Milan |url=http://genoacfc.it/notizie/antonini-al-genoa-birsa-al-milan/ |work=genoacfc.it |publisher=Genoa Cricket and Football Club |date=31 August 2013 |accessdate=31 August 2013 |language=Italian |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130904021907/http://genoacfc.it/notizie/antonini-al-genoa-birsa-al-milan/ |archivedate=4 September 2013}}</ref> He made 26 appearances in Serie A, scoring two goals, in his first season with the Grifone.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://aic.football.it/scheda/5619/antonini-luca.htm|title=Schede analitica di Luca Antonini - a cura di Football.it|website=aic.football.it}}</ref> The following season, he made just seven appearances and was then released by the club.
