=== 2019 European Parliament election === thumb|upright|Logo of the Renaissance list of LREM, MoDem and other liberal parties Ahead of the 2019 European Parliament election, La République En Marche! was widely expected to formalise a cooperation agreement with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the main liberal-centrist group in the European Parliament.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.politico.eu/article/emmanuel-macron-liberal-alde-love-affair-goes-cold/|title=Macron's liberal love affair goes cold|last=Baume|first=Maïa de La|date=18 January 2019|website=Politico}}</ref> However, amid the domestic upheaval caused by the Gilets Jaunes protests and the broader rise of nationalist and populist forces across Europe, President Emmanuel Macron recalibrated his strategy. Rather than aligning LREM directly with the existing ALDE brand, Macron chose to lead a more autonomous, pro-European campaign under the banner of ''Renaissance'', framing it as a call for continental political renewal.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.politico.eu/article/emmanuel-macron-lrem-renaissance-reborn-again-as-name-of-macrons-campaign/|title=Renaissance reborn again — as name of Macron's campaign|last=Baume|first=Maïa de La|date=6 March 2019|website=Politico|access-date=26 December 2019}}</ref>

Following the election—during which the Renaissance list secured a strong second-place finish in France—LREM and its allies played a central role in the reorganisation of the ALDE parliamentary group. This process culminated in the launch of a new centrist and liberal alliance: Renew Europe, officially formed in June 2019. The group brought together Macron's Renaissance list, ALDE-affiliated parties, and other like-minded liberal and pro-European movements from across the European Union, making Renew Europe the third-largest political group in the European Parliament.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2019-06-12 |title=EU Parliament: Liberal ALDE group rebrands as 'Renew Europe' |url=http://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2019/06/12/eu-parliament-liberal-alde-group-rebrands-as-renew-europe |access-date=2025-09-09 |website=euronews |language=en}}</ref>

=== 2020 municipal elections === For the 2020 French municipal elections, La République En Marche! (LREM) set itself the ambitious objective of electing around 10,000 municipal councillors nationwide. Following the first round, party officials reported having already secured approximately 6,000 seats, mainly in small towns and rural communes.<ref name="20 Minutes">{{cite web|url=https://www.20minutes.fr/municipales/2810355-20200629-resultats-municipales-trop-jeune-parti-zero-deroute-electorale-lrem-revendique-146-maires-soutenus-investis|title=Trop jeune, parti de zéro… LREM accuse le coup après son échec|publisher=20 Minutes|date=29 June 2020|access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref> The party invested 592 lead candidates (''têtes de liste'') in municipalities with more than 9,000 inhabitants, of whom 289 were official LREM members.{{Citation needed|date=September 2025}}

Between the two rounds, LREM pursued a strategy of forging local alliances—76 with right-leaning lists and 33 with left-leaning ones—in towns over 9,000 residents.{{Citation needed|date=September 2025}} In several large cities, such as Bordeaux, Strasbourg, and Tours, the party aligned with centre-right incumbents to counter rising ecological or left-wing lists. According to party leadership, this skew toward the right was largely due to the political landscape inherited from the 2014 municipal elections, where the right had made significant gains. Marie Guévenoux, co-president of LREM's national investiture commission, justified the imbalance by saying that the party would have "preferred to forge alliances with the left," but left-wing groups generally declined to cooperate.{{Citation needed|date=September 2025}}

Despite the party's confident outlook following previous successes in the 2017 legislative and 2019 European elections, LREM ultimately failed to win any major city. It claimed 146 mayors invested or supported in municipalities with more than 9,000 inhabitants, and only three municipalities over 30,000 residents—all of which were victories by right-wing incumbents supported (but not officially labeled) by LREM.<ref name="20 Minutes"/>

In key symbolic cities such as Paris and Lyon, where the party had invested heavily, its candidates suffered heavy defeats, often finishing in third or fourth place.{{Citation needed|date=September 2025}} In Bordeaux, an alliance with the outgoing right-wing mayor failed to block a surge by the ecologists. Across the country, a “green wave” led by EELV swept through major urban centres, including Lyon, Strasbourg, and Bordeaux, dashing LREM's hopes of a metropolitan breakthrough.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.france24.com/en/20200625-french-municipal-elections-2020-city-by-city-the-great-battles-of-the-second-round|title=French municipal elections 2020: city by city, the great battles of the second round|publisher=France 24|date=25 June 2020|access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.lemonde.fr/politique/article/2020/06/29/municipales-2020-une-vague-verte-historique-deferle-sur-les-grandes-villes-francaises_6044496_823448.html|title=Municipales 2020 : avec EELV, une vague verte historique déferle sur les grandes villes françaises|newspaper=Le Monde|date=29 June 2020|access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref>

The campaign also reflected deeper political tensions facing LREM. The party declared that its parliamentary group would adopt the name ''Renaissance'', a term intended to symbolise political renewal and the continuation of Macron's reformist agenda.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2022-05-05 |title=France: LREM devient "Renaissance", au sein d'une confédération pour les législatives |url=https://www.rfi.fr/fr/en-bref/20220505-france-lrem-devient-renaissance-au-sein-d-une-conf%C3%A9d%C3%A9ration-pour-les-l%C3%A9gislatives |access-date=2022-05-05 |website=RFI |language=fr}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |date=2022-05-05 |title=Législatives 2022 : LREM devient «Renaissance», sur fond d'accord Ferrand, Bayrou et Philippe |url=https://www.lefigaro.fr/elections/legislatives/legislatives-2022-le-camp-macron-s-accorde-avec-edouard-philippe-et-s-unit-en-une-confederation-20220505 |access-date=2022-05-05 |website=Le Figaro |language=fr}}</ref> This move coincided with the creation of a broader electoral confederation uniting Macron-aligned forces, including François Bayrou's MoDem and Édouard Philippe's Horizons.

In September 2022, LREM formally changed its name to ''Renaissance'', establishing it as the new identity of the party itself and not just the parliamentary group.<ref name=":4">{{Cite news |date=2022-09-18 |title=Renaissance, un nouveau parti pour réactiver le " dépassement " macroniste |language=fr |work=Le Monde.fr |url=https://www.lemonde.fr/politique/article/2022/09/18/renaissance-un-nouveau-parti-pour-reactiver-le-depassement-macroniste_6142086_823448.html |access-date=2022-09-18}}</ref> The name change was part of an effort to consolidate the presidential majority into a single political force, in line with Macron's long-standing goal of transcending the traditional left-right divide ("dépassement"). However, this ambition met with limited success. While two smaller Macron-aligned parties—Agir and Territories of Progress—formally merged into Renaissance, key allies such as MoDem and Horizons opted to retain their independence within the wider Ensemble coalition.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Goar |first=Matthieu |date=2022-09-17 |title=Renaissance, Emmanuel Macron's smaller-than-expected new party |language=en |work=Le Monde |url=https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2022/09/17/renaissance-emmanuel-macron-s-smaller-than-expected-new-party_5997317_5.html |access-date=2023-05-31}}</ref>

=== 2024 legislative election === Following a poor result in the European Parliament elections, Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly on 9 June 2024, triggering snap elections scheduled for 30 June and 7 July 2024.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2024-06-10 |title=Macron's snap election fateful for France, warns ally |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv22jkmldlxo |access-date=2025-09-09 |website=BBC News |language=en-GB}}</ref> Renaissance led the centrist coalition known as ''Ensemble pour la République'', which included MoDem, Horizons, UDI, and the Radical Party. However, internal tensions quickly arose, particularly with Édouard Philippe's Horizons party, which refused to fully campaign under the Renaissance banner and demanded more autonomy, leading to separate candidate declarations in several constituencies.<ref>{{cite web |title=Législatives 2024 : Édouard Philippe revendique davantage d'autonomie pour Horizons |url=https://www.lemonde.fr/politique/article/2024/06/13/legislatives-2024-edouard-philippe-revendique-davantage-d-autonomie-pour-horizons_6239420_823448.html |publisher=Le Monde |date=13 June 2024 |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref>

Renaissance invested more than 200 candidates, including several ministers (such as Gabriel Attal, Gérald Darmanin), former ministers (Élisabeth Borne, Olivier Véran), and new faces like Stéphane Séjourné and Loïc Signor.<ref>{{cite web |title=Législatives 2024 : Renaissance se met en ordre de marche en investissant ses 200 premiers candidats |url=https://lcp.fr/actualites/legislatives-2024-renaissance-se-met-en-ordre-de-marche-en-investissant-ses-200-premiers |publisher=LCP |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref> In the first round on 30 June, the Ensemble coalition obtained only around 21% of the vote, trailing both the Rassemblement National (33.1%) and the left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire (28%).<ref>{{cite web |title=Résultats Législatives 2024 : le RN en tête, le NFP deuxième, la majorité sortante en recul |url=https://www.economiematin.fr/legislatives-2024-resultats-victoire-rn-nfp |publisher=Economie Matin |date=30 June 2024 |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref> Only four Ensemble candidates were elected outright, and Renaissance was leading in just 70 constituencies before the run-off.<ref>{{cite web |title=French election results: Macron's camp faces defeat |url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/jul/07/french-election-2024-results-latest-france-news-marine-le-pen-national-rally-emmanuel-macron |publisher=The Guardian |date=7 July 2024 |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref>

In the second round, held on 7 July 2024, no single bloc obtained a majority. The left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire became the largest force with approximately 182 seats, followed by Ensemble with around 163 seats, and the Rassemblement National with about 143.<ref>{{cite web |title=PM Gabriel Attal elected head of Renaissance group in French parliament |url=https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2024/07/13/pm-gabriel-attal-elected-head-of-renaissance-group-in-french-parliament_6683109_5.html |publisher=Le Monde |date=13 July 2024 |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref> Renaissance alone dropped from 245 seats in 2022 to about 160–162, according to projections.<ref name="BFMTV">{{cite web |title=Résultats législatives 2024 : Renaissance et LR peuvent-ils s'allier ? |url=https://www.bfmtv.com/politique/elections/legislatives/resultats-legislatives-2024-renaissance-et-lr-peuvent-ils-s-allier-pour-former-un-nouveau-gouvernement_AV-202407070534.html |publisher=BFMTV |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref> The outcome prompted a political crisis within the centrist bloc. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal convened an emergency meeting to coordinate second-round endorsements and later was elected president of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly on 13 July.<ref>{{cite web |title=Renaissance: Gabriel Attal élu président du groupe à l'Assemblée |url=https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2024/07/13/pm-gabriel-attal-elected-head-of-renaissance-group-in-french-parliament_6683109_5.html |publisher=Le Monde |access-date=9 September 2025}}</ref>

Following the election, discussions intensified over a possible alliance between Renaissance and the centre-right Republicans (LR) to form a working majority, though such a coalition would still fall short of the 289 seats required for an absolute majority.<ref name="BFMTV"/>
