Malavalli was born in early March 1943 in Mysore, Karnataka, India.{{cn|date=May 2024}} He moved to Düsseldorf, Germany in 1972 following his graduation from the National Institute of Engineering with a bachelor's degree in engineering.<ref name="Business Journal"/> After graduating from the Institute of Engineering in Düsseldorf with a master's degree in industrial electronics, Malavalli moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.<ref name="Business Journal"/>
