The institute is named after Aleksey Krylov, the Russian naval designer and mathematician who was one of its first superintendents, and is based in Saint Petersburg.<ref name=polmar>{{cite book|last=Polmar|first=Norman|title=The Naval Institute guide to the Soviet Navy|year=1990|publisher=Naval Institute Press|location=Annapolis, Md.|isbn=0870212419|edition=5th}}</ref>

==History== The institute was established in 1894, to operate the Russian Empire's first ship model basin—the Naval Administration Towing Tank—on New Holland Island in Saint Petersburg. On 8 March that year, Emperor Alexander III and members of the royal family toured the facility, which is considered the foundation date of the institute.<ref name=kchistory>[http://krylov-center.ru/old/eng/ins/history/history12.htm History 1894] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131224110508/http://krylov-center.ru/old/eng/ins/history/history12.htm |date=2013-12-24 }}, Krylov State Research Center.</ref> On 3 January 1900, Aleksey Krylov was appointed acting superintendent of the Tank, and proposed the establishment of a broader shipbuilding research institute based around the tank, including laboratories for electrical engineering, and physical, chemical and mechanical testing.<ref name=mactutor>J J O'Connor and E F Robertson: [http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/Printonly/Krylov_Aleksei.html Aleksei Nikolaevich Krylov], ''MacTutor History of Mathematics'', University of St Andrews, Scotland.</ref>

Originally subordinate to the Ministry of Shipbuilding Industry of the Soviet Union, the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI) worked only for the Soviet Navy, but now operates in all ship science disciplines, and conducts sponsored research for international commercial shipbuilding companies.<ref name=majumdar>Majumdar, Peter: [https://fas.org/nuke/guide/russia/industry/docs/pmnews3.htm Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute, St Petersburg, Russia: An Update],'' Newsletter 96-003'', Office of Naval Research Europe, 18 June 1996.</ref>
