===Trikala=== After leaving [[Olympiacos F.C.|Olympiacos]]' youth team in 2008, Fortounis moved to Trikala to play for [[Trikala F.C.|AO Trikala]]. ===Asteras Tripolis=== Because of his good appearances with the [[Greece national under-17 football team|Greece under-17 national team]], [[Vangelis Vlachos]], [[Asteras Tripolis F.C.|Asteras Tripolis]]' manager convinced him to join the Peloponeesean team. He made his debut in a draw with [[PAOK FC|PAOK]] in Tripolis. Fortounis' debut with the [[Greece national football team|Greece]] came against [[Belgium national football team|Belgium]] in February 2012 as a suspension with the U-21 side allowed [[Fernando Santos (football coach)|Fernando Santos]] to call-up the [[Kaiserslautern]]'s prospect to the senior squad. Showing plenty of maturity against the Belgians, Fortounis was also given test runs against [[Slovenia national football team|Slovenia]] and [[Armenia national football team|Armenia]] in the final two Greece friendlies ahead of [[UEFA Euro 2012]]. ==Style of play== {{Unreferenced section|date=March 2026}} ==Career statistics== Throughout his career at Olympiacos, Fortounis became one of the club’s best playmakers and creative midfielders. He mostly played as an attacking midfielder, and he regularly tried to get the ball and control all the attacking movements of the team he played for. As an extremely skillful player, Fortounis could effectively carry the ball, pass it around, deliver crosses and take advantage of dead balls.

Fortounis is known as a highly creative player who showed excellent vision in matches. He constantly appeared on the list of best players in the league in terms of goals scored, assists provided, key passes, successful passes, and crosses delivered. Being a very productive attacker, Fortounis managed to demonstrate his skills especially during those seasons when he did not get injured.
