The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, {{convert|264|km|mi|0}} north of the state capital, Melbourne on the Goulburn Valley Highway, near the Murray River. At the {{CensusAU|2011}}, Koonoomoo had a population of 255.<ref name=abs/>

Koonoomoo had a Post Office only for a brief period in 1917. On 21 March 2013 the town was struck by a violent EF4 tornado.
