The '''Kodar Mountains''' ({{langx|ru|Кода́р}}) are a mountain range in the Transbaikal region of Siberia, Russia. The name Kodar is derived from "khada", an Evenki word for rock.<ref name=insovietrussia>{{cite web |last1=Кулаков |first1=В.С. |last2=Руденко |first2=Ю.Т. |title=Кодар, хребет |publisher=Энциклопедия Забайкалья |language=Russian |trans-title=Kodar Ridge |url=http://ez.chita.ru/encycl/concepts/?id=2469 |accessdate=29 August 2015}}</ref>
The range is part of the Udokan Ore Region that includes the Kalar and Udokan ranges.<ref name="ЭСБЕ2">[http://bse.sci-lib.com/article113643.html Udokan Ore Region] / ''Great Soviet Encyclopedia:'' in 30 vols. / Ch. ed. A.M. Prokhorov. - 3rd ed. - M. Soviet Encyclopedia, 1969-1978.</ref>
==Geography== The Kodar Mountains are part of the Stanovoy Highlands, which range from the northern tip of Lake Baikal to the Olyokma River. The Northern Muya Range rises at the western end and the Delyun-Uran Range to the northwest. Lying within the Baikal Rift Zone, the area is prone to earthquakes.<ref name=insovietrussia /> The range is bounded by the Vitim and Chara rivers, both tributaries of the Lena. To the north and northeast it borders with the Olyokma-Chara Plateau —in the upper reaches of the Chara river.<ref name=stokes13 /> The Apsat River flows through the range.<ref name=insovietrussia />
The Kodar range is the highest in the Transbaikal region. {{convert|3072|m|sp=us}} high Pik BAM (Baikal Amur Magistral) is the highest summit of the range and the Stanovoy Highlands, as well as of Zabaykalsky Krai. Some sources claim that neighboring Pik Martena, rising {{convert|8|km|sp=us}} to the WSW, beyond the border, is the highest point of Irkutsk Oblast.<ref>[https://baikal24.ru/text/02-09-2012/samoj/ У самой высокой горы Иркутской области появилось название - пик Мартена]</ref><ref name="STM">{{cite web|url=https://maps.vlasenko.net/smtm1000/o-50.jpg|title=Топографска карта O-50, G; M 1:1 000 000 - Topographic USSR Chart (in Russian)|access-date=26 May 2023}}</ref>
The topography consists of narrow, deep valleys that descend over {{convert|1000|m|sp=us}} from the surrounding terrain. According to a 2013 study, the range contains 34 glaciers. With the exception of some tropical glaciers, they are the most isolated glaciers of the world, over {{convert|1200|km|sp=us}} away from any other glacier.<ref name=stokes13 /> The glaciers are small, at most {{convert|2.1|km|sp=us}} in length.<ref name=stokes13>{{cite journal| last1=Stokes |first1=Chris R. |last2=Shahgedanova |first2=Maria |last3=Evans |first3=Ian S. |last4=Popovnin |first4=Victor V. |title=Accelerated loss of alpine glaciers in the Kodar Mountains, south-eastern Siberia |journal=Global and Planetary Change |date=February 2013 |volume=101 |pages=82–96 |doi=10.1016/j.gloplacha.2012.12.010|bibcode=2013GPC...101...82S |url=http://dro.dur.ac.uk/10779/1/10779.pdf?DDD14+dul4eg }}</ref><ref name=mountains />
==Climate== The area experiences a subarctic climate, with the Siberian High resulting in very low temperatures and precipitation from November to March. Meteorological measurements taken in 1960s reported between {{convert|850|and|1000|mm|sp=us}} of precipitation a year at an elevation of {{convert|2500|m|sp=us}}, with 50 percent falling as snow. Although snow can occur any time of year, 80 percent falls in late Spring and early Autumn.<ref name=stokes13 /> The snow line is between {{convert|2200|and|2600|m|sp=us}}.<ref name=mountains>{{cite web |title=Mountains of the Baikal Region and Transbaikalia |publisher=Russian Nature |url=http://www.rusnature.info/reg/14_5.htm |accessdate=29 August 2015}}</ref>
