'''''Kjarninn''''' ({{lit|the core}}) was an Icelandic online newspaper founded in August 2013. Previously ''Kjarninn'' was a weekly digital news magazine served via Apple App Store aimed at tablet computer users but PDFs were also available at the website. Since September 2014 ''Kjarninn''' was an online-only newspaper.
The founders of ''Kjarninn'' originally worked at 365's free newspaper ''Fréttablaðið'', which maintained a virtual monopoly on the market (69% in 2004).<ref>[http://www.menntamalaraduneyti.is/media/MRN-pdf_Upplysingar-Utgefid/Fjolmidlaskyrsla.pdf Greinargerð nefndar menntamálaráðherra um eignarhald á fjölmiðlum á Íslandi]</ref> In February 2013, Magnús Halldórsson, later a journalist at ''Kjarninn'', criticised businessman and former owner Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson, whose wife Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir was the owner of 365, for trying to influence the editorial independence of ''Fréttablaðið'' in his favour.<ref>[http://www.mbl.is/frettir/innlent/2013/02/21/jon_asgeir_reynir_ad_thrysta_a_bladamenn/ Jón Ásgeir reynir að þrýsta á blaðamenn]</ref> Shortly after this, Magnús and Þórður left 365 and founded ''Kjarninn''.
From its first publication in August 2013, Kjarninn made headlines in Iceland for publishing leaked material connected to the 2008–11 Icelandic financial crisis. After the publication of the first issue the Financial Supervisory Authority demanded a report on Keflavik Savings Bank (by then defunct) that ''Kjarninn'' published be withdrawn.<ref>[http://www.ruv.is/frett/vilja-ad-kjarninn-fjarlaegi-skyrslu-af-vef Vilja að Kjarninn fjarlægi skýrslu af vef]</ref> In October 2013 the Kaupthing winding up committee insisted ''Kjarninn'' withdraw the publication of a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report about how Kaupthing employees profited hugely by hedging against a strong Icelandic króna.<ref>[http://www.noodls.com/view/BE3B5A7EC6177E9C0030954B69DE0681D2C35936 Tilkynning vegna fyrirhugaðrar birtingar Kjarnans á skýrslu PwC], original no longer accessible<br>[http://www.ruv.is/frett/kaupthingsmenn-toku-stodu-gegn-kronunni Kaupþingsmenn tóku stöðu gegn krónunni]</ref>
In December 2022, the owners of the paper reached an agreement with Stundin to merge the two papers. The new paper was named Heimildin and was first published on 13 January 2023.<ref>{{cite news |author1=Einar Þór Sigurðsson |title=Nýr fjölmiðill kemur út í dag |url=https://www.frettabladid.is/frettir/nyr-fjolmidill-kemur-ut-i-dag/ |access-date=13 February 2023 |work=Fréttablaðið |date=13 January 2023 |language=Icelandic}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |author1=Andri Yrkill Valsson |title=Stundin og Kjarninn í eina sæng með nýju nafni |url=https://www.ruv.is/frettir/innlent/2022-12-21-stundin-og-kjarninn-i-eina-saeng-med-nyju-nafni |access-date=13 February 2023 |work=RÚV |date=21 December 2022 |language=Icelandic}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |title=Nýi fjölmiðillinn nefnist Heimildin |url=https://www.mbl.is/frettir/innlent/2023/01/13/nyi_fjolmidillinn_nefnist_heimildin/ |access-date=13 February 2023 |work=Morgunblaðið |date=13 January 2023 |language=Icelandic}}</ref>
