==Name== The name "Kineta" comes from the [[Albanian language|Albanian]] word "këneta", which means "small lagoon" or "marsh". In 1700, the town was mentioned in a Venetian map as ''Valle Chineta.''<ref>{{Cite book |last=Bennet |first=John |title=A Historical and Economic Geography of Ottoman Greece |publisher=American School of Classical Studies at Athens |year=2005 |isbn=0-87661-534-5 |location=Athens |publication-date=2005 |pages=130 |language=En}}</ref> The lagoon does not exist anymore but Kineta still has (2010) more than its share of gnats.

==History== In antiquity the temple of Apollo Latous (Latoan Apollo) was located near Kineta. The temple marked the boundary between Corinthia and Megaris in the time of [[Pausanias (geographer)|Pausanias]]. A little above the temple the road to Megara passed over the Scironian rocks.<ref name="k543">{{cite book | last=Bell | first=R.E. | title=Place-names in Classical Mythology: Greece | publisher=ABC-CLIO | year=1989 | isbn=978-0-87436-507-8 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=CErYAAAAMAAJ | access-date=2024-08-27 | page=92}}</ref>
