The castle lies on the A820 between Doune and Dunblane in southern Perthshire.

The property was originally built by the Earl of Menteith in 1460. It is currently owned by Sir James and Lady Carola Campbell. The castle was remodelled by the Scottish architect Thomas Heiton<ref name="scottisharchitects">{{cite web|url=http://www.scottisharchitects.org.uk/architect_full.php?id=201088|website=scottisharchitects.org.uk|title=www.scottisharchitects.org.uk/architect_full.php?id=201088|accessdate=2017-09-27}}</ref> to its current appearance in the late 1870s<ref name="hha">{{cite web|url=https://www.hha.org.uk/Property/2552/Kilbryde-Castle|website=hha.org.uk|title=Kilbryde Castle :: Historic Houses Association|accessdate=2017-09-27|archive-date=28 September 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170928060008/https://www.hha.org.uk/Property/2552/Kilbryde-Castle|url-status=dead}}</ref> following the collapse of the roof in 1877. The building was refurbished again in the 1950s.
