Kikori lies in the delta of the Kikori River at the head of the Gulf of Papua. This area is particularly biologically rich with a diversity of ecosystems and densely forested, with an intricate system of rivers. The geography is that of limestone karst country, with clay type soils. Oil exploitation in Kikori has been operating for several years. Its first commercial oil deposits were found there by the Kutubu Joint Venture (KJV) which has since constructed a pipeline to the Gulf of Papua and is actively extracting oil from the region.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/where_we_work/new_guinea_forests/conservation_new_guinea_forests/sites_new_guinea_forests/kikori_basin/|title=Kikori Basin, Papua New Guinea|publisher=WWF Panda|accessdate=July 10, 2010}}</ref>

It is the site of Kikori Airport.

==Climate== Kikori has a tropical rainforest climate (Köppen ''Af'') with very heavy rainfall year-round. Temperatures in Kikori are uniformly hot and humidity extremely uncomfortable.

The town has an average annual rainfall of around {{convert|5700|mm|in|-1|disp=or}},<ref>''Merriam Webster's Geographical Dictionary, Third Edition'', p. 592</ref> making it and surrounding Gulf Province one of the wettest lowland places on Earth – comparable to the Chocó of Colombia, the exposed monsoonal coasts of Myanmar, the Caribbean Coast of Central America, and the Alaska Panhandle. Rainfall averages at least {{convert|250|mm|inch|-1|disp=or}} during every month of the year, but orographic lifting of the southeast trade winds between May and September creates a rainfall peak in those months which average over {{convert|550|mm|inch|-1|disp=or}} – twice as much as the least wet months of November and December and a striking contrast to the rainlessness of those same trade winds in relatively nearby Northern Australia. {{Weather box |width = auto | location = Kikori | metric first = Yes | single line = Yes |temperature colour = pastel | Jan high C = 32.1 | Feb high C = 31.6 | Mar high C = 31.2 | Apr high C = 30.4 | May high C = 29.4 | Jun high C = 28.6 | Jul high C = 26.7 | Aug high C = 28.0 | Sep high C = 28.4 | Oct high C = 29.5 | Nov high C = 31.7 | Dec high C = 32.2 | Jan mean C = 26.6 | Feb mean C = 26.4 | Mar mean C = 26.1 | Apr mean C = 25.9 | May mean C = 25.3 | Jun mean C = 24.8 | Jul mean C = 23.6 | Aug mean C = 24.4 | Sep mean C = 24.5 | Oct mean C = 25.0 | Nov mean C = 26.6 | Dec mean C = 27.0 | year mean C = | Jan low C = 21.2 | Feb low C = 21.3 | Mar low C = 21.1 | Apr low C = 21.4 | May low C = 21.2 | Jun low C = 21.1 | Jul low C = 20.5 | Aug low C = 20.9 | Sep low C = 20.7 | Oct low C = 20.5 | Nov low C = 21.5 | Dec low C = 21.9 |rain colour= green |Jan rain mm=342 |Feb rain mm=372 |Mar rain mm=331 |Apr rain mm=405 |May rain mm=649 |Jun rain mm=677 |Jul rain mm=658 |Aug rain mm=566 |Sep rain mm=599 |Oct rain mm=464 |Nov rain mm=262 |Dec rain mm=286 |year rain mm= 5611.00 |source 1 = Climate-Data.org<ref>{{cite web |url = https://en.climate-data.org/location/711269/ |title = Climate: Kikori |publisher=Climate-Data.org |accessdate = 19 October 2020}}</ref> }}
