The creation of the Kieldrecht lock has relieved the amount of traffic for the Waasland Canal that the Kallo Lock was experiencing. The lock, situated in the municipality of Beveren, was opened on 10 June 2016 in the presence of King Philippe of Belgium.
==Construction== On 24 October 2011, work started on the Kieldrecht Lock on the left bank of the Scheldt. The construction of the lock was completed on 27 April 2015,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2015/04/27/grootste_sluis_terwereldbeleefthistorischmoment-1-2319153/|title=Largest lock in the world experiences "historic moment"|date=27 April 2015|access-date=2016-01-15}}</ref> and the lock was filled with water. The filling with 1 million m3 of water took a week. The official opening was initially planned for 15 April 2016, but opening was postponed due to heavy water damage in a technical room.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.hln.be/in-de-buurt/beveren/opening-kieldrechtsluis-loopt-vertraging-op~a59b155e/|title=Opening Kieldrecht lock is delayed|publisher=HLN.be|date=4 March 2016|access-date=2016-06-10}}</ref> The opening finally took place on 10 June 2016, in the presence of King Filip.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2016/06/10/kieldrechtsluis_feestelijkgeopenddoorkoningfilip-1-2678066/|title=Kieldrechtsluis festively opened by King Filip|date=10 June 2016|access-date=2016-06-10}}</ref> Based on the design of the Berendrecht Lock, it has the same length and width, but a bottom at {{convert|17.8|m}} below TAW. To construct the lock, 9.1 million m3 of earth was excavated, and 22,000 tonnes of structural steel, three times the amount required to build the Eiffel Tower. Costing €340 million, of which 50% is financed by the European Investment Bank, the Flemish KBC Bank also made an €81 million credit line available, with the balance provided by the Antwerp Port Authority and the Flemish Government.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.porttechnology.org/news/construction_of_the_worlds_largest_lock_begins_at_antwerp_port/|title=Works start on the world's largest lock at Antwerp Port|publisher=PortTechnology.org|date=23 November 2011|access-date=2016-06-10|archive-date=2019-01-30|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190130220827/https://www.porttechnology.org/news/construction_of_the_worlds_largest_lock_begins_at_antwerp_port/|url-status=dead}}</ref>
