He is a former academy player who graduated from the youth ranks at Luton Town. A versatile footballer, Keane played in every position for Luton other than in goal or as a striker, and played for the club across four different divisions.
==Club career== ===Luton Town=== Born in Luton, Bedfordshire,<ref name=Hugman0910/> Keane made his first-team debut for Luton Town under manager Mike Newell at the age of 16, in a Football League Trophy victory against Rushden & Diamonds early in the 2003–04 season.<ref>{{cite web |title=Rushden & Diamonds 1–2 Luton Town |url=http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10372~25692,00.html |publisher=Luton Town F.C. |date=4 November 2003 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120218035109/http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0%2C%2C10372~25692%2C00.html |archive-date=18 February 2012 |url-status=dead}}</ref> Keane played well and stayed in the side for a further 16 games that season,<ref name=sb0304/> his league debut coming in a 0–0 draw at Wycombe Wanderers in February 2004.<ref>{{cite web |title=Wycombe 0–0 Luton Town |url=http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10372~23294,00.html |publisher=Luton Town F.C. |date=14 February 2004 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120218035133/http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0%2C%2C10372~23294%2C00.html |archive-date=18 February 2012 |url-status=dead}}</ref> Newell predominantly played Keane at right-back as cover for Kevin Foley, but he also featured in midfield. Keane scored his first goal for Luton on 17 April as a last minute winner in a 3–2 victory over Bristol City.<ref>{{cite web |title=Luton 3–2 Bristol City |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_2/3615887.stm |publisher=BBC Sport |date=17 April 2004 |access-date=11 February 2010}}</ref>
During the 2004–05 season, Keane became a regular squad member. Appearing at centre-back, full-back and in midfield, he made 19 appearances in all competitions.<ref name=sb0405/> Luton went on to win the League One title that season with 98 points,<ref>{{cite web |title=Luton Town 2004–2005: Table: Final table |url=http://www.statto.com/football/teams/luton-town/2004-2005/table |publisher=Statto Organisation |access-date=24 December 2016}}</ref> rewarding Keane with a winner's medal.<ref name=Hugman0910/>
With Keane now a Championship player, he was utilised at right-back, left-back, in central defence and in right midfield during the course of the 2005–06 season, which saw him make 12 appearances, scoring once.<ref name=sb0506/> He was awarded the Young Player of the Season award that season for his performances,<ref name=2006YPOTY>{{cite news |title=Full strength Heikkinen! |url=http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/full-strength-heikkinen-1-1016912 |newspaper=Luton Today |date=26 April 2006 |access-date=24 December 2016 |archive-date=13 August 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170813011456/http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/full-strength-heikkinen-1-1016912 |url-status=dead }}</ref> and was rewarded with a new two-year contract.<ref>{{cite web |title=Luton offer fresh deals to pair |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/luton_town/4884548.stm |publisher=BBC Sport |date=7 April 2006 |access-date=20 November 2009}}</ref> In 2006–07, Keane made 19 league appearances, scoring one goal,<ref name=sb0607/> as Luton were relegated to League One.<ref>{{cite web |title=Derby 1–0 Luton |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/6555423.stm |publisher=BBC Sport |date=20 April 2007 |access-date=24 December 2016}}</ref>
The next season, after Newell's departure, Keane was frozen out of the first-team by new manager Kevin Blackwell, who preferred to play his own new signing Richard Jackson. However, Keane was eventually brought back into the team to replace Jackson, and later made the position his own when Luton Town fan favourite Mick Harford replaced Blackwell as manager in January 2008. Harford made Keane club captain, but the price of administration condemned Luton to another relegation, this time to League Two. Keane won the Player of the Season award at the end of the season, as well as the Players' Player of the Year and Internet Player of the Season award.<ref>{{cite web |title=Keane claims Player of the year award |url=http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10372~1306446,00.html |publisher=Luton Town F.C. |date=6 May 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120218035204/http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0%2C%2C10372~1306446%2C00.html |archive-date=18 February 2012 |url-status=dead}}</ref><ref name=2008POTY>{{cite news |title=Keane hat-trick |url=http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/keane-hat-trick-1-1029478 |newspaper=Luton Today |date=8 May 2008 |access-date=24 December 2016 |archive-date=13 August 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170813010506/http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/keane-hat-trick-1-1029478 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
Luton were docked 30 points for financial irregularities at the beginning of the 2008–09 season, and although Keane made 40 league appearances,<ref name=sb0809/> primarily in midfield, he could not prevent the inevitable as Luton were relegated from the Football League for the first time in 89 years.<ref>{{cite web |title=Luton 0–0 Chesterfield |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_3/7979729.stm |publisher=BBC Sport |date=13 April 2009 |access-date=24 December 2016}}</ref> Some solace could be found as Luton beat Scunthorpe United 3–2 in the 2009 Football League Trophy final at Wembley Stadium, with Keane producing a superb performance in midfield.<ref>{{cite news |title=How the Hatters rated |url=http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/how-the-hatters-rated-1-1033374 |newspaper=Luton Today |date=5 April 2009 |access-date=24 December 2016 }}{{Dead link|date=October 2025 |bot=InternetArchiveBot }}</ref> His displays earned Keane the Player of the Season and Internet Player of the Season awards for the second year in a row.<ref name=2009POTY>{{cite news |title=King Keane rules the awards roost |url=http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/king-keane-rules-the-awards-roost-1-1033705 |newspaper=Luton Today |date=28 April 2009 |access-date=24 December 2016 |archive-date=12 April 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160412012553/http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/king-keane-rules-the-awards-roost-1-1033705 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

On 15 January 2010, Keane was placed on the transfer list at Luton. His refusal to sign a new contract, which would expire in June 2010 and effectively mean he would leave the club on a free transfer, was cited as the reason.<ref>{{cite web |title=Money mindful of Salisbury threat |url=http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/PreMatchAnalysis/0,,10372~1933756,00.html |publisher=Luton Town F.C. |date=15 January 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100124112328/http://www.lutontown.co.uk/page/PreMatchAnalysis/0%2C%2C10372~1933756%2C00.html |archive-date=24 January 2010 |url-status=dead}}</ref> However, the January transfer window closed with no bids for the player received. Then-Luton manager Richard Money stated the club was in negotiations with Keane over a new contract regardless of his transfer status, calling him a "talisman" to Luton.<ref>{{cite news |title=Hatters hierarchy Keane to tie Keith to fresh contract |url=http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/hatters-hierarchy-keane-to-tie-keith-to-fresh-contract-1-1036933 |newspaper=Luton Today |date=19 January 2010 |access-date=24 December 2016 |archive-date=25 December 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161225081550/http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/hatters-hierarchy-keane-to-tie-keith-to-fresh-contract-1-1036933 |url-status=dead }}</ref> On 9 February 2010, Keane scored direct from a corner kick in the last minute of the game, his first goal in over two years, to earn Luton a dramatic 2–1 win against then-league leaders Oxford United.
