Hubbell, originally from Dedham, Massachusetts, trained on grass at the Longwood Club in Boston. Her family had clay courts on their vacation home in Chocorua, New Hampshire, which gave her exposure to another surface.<ref name="Cummings">{{cite news |last1=Cummings |first1=Karen |title=Kay Hubbell On-Court |url=https://www.mtearchronicles.com/single-post/1984/07/13/Kay-Hubbell-On-Court |work=Mountainear |date=July 14, 1984 |language=en}}</ref> While studying physics at Vassar College she won the national intercollegiate singles and doubles titles every year from 1940 to 1942.
