Hacker studied philosophy, history and Jewish studies at the University of Freiburg and the University of Jerusalem. Her studies in Israel have been seen as an attempt to compensate for the strong anti-Semitic feelings of her Silesian grandmother. She did not finish her studies with an academic degree. Since 1996, she has been living as a freelance writer in Berlin.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.suhrkamp.de/autoren/rights_autor.cfm?id=1693 |title=Author Katharina Hacker – Suhrkamp Insel |accessdate=30 July 2008 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070818165038/http://suhrkamp.de/autoren/rights_autor.cfm?id=1693 |archivedate=18 August 2007 }}</ref> In 2006, she was the second writer to be awarded the German Book Prize for ''Die Habenichtse''.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.deutscher-buchpreis.de/de/100014?valid=true&meldungs_id=120442|title=Deutscher Buchpreis|website=www.deutscher-buchpreis.de|access-date=30 July 2008|archive-date=18 July 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110718225623/http://www.deutscher-buchpreis.de/de/100014?valid=true&meldungs_id=120442|url-status=dead}}</ref> In this and other works, Hacker examines the consequences of globalization and neoliberalism on the working life, social relations, and family interactions of her German protagonists.<ref>{{Cite book|title=German Women's Writing in the Twenty-First Century|last=Druxes|first=Helga|publisher=Camden House|year=2015|isbn=978-1-64014-025-7|editor-last=Baer|editor-first=Hester|location=Rochester|pages=156|chapter=The Indictment of Neoliberalism and Communism in the Novels of Katharina Hacker, Nikola Richter, Judith Schalansky, and Julia Schoch|editor-last2=Merley Hill|editor-first2=Alexandra}}</ref>
