Harada started climbing in 2009 in Osaka.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://frictionlabs.de/athletes/kai-harada|title=Kai Harada|website=frictionlabs.de |access-date=16 August 2019}}</ref> He started competition climbing in 2015, placing in the Youth A Bouldering Championships and the Junior Asian Championships.
