Her husband, Folkert Meeuw, competed for West Germany in swimming at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics and won a silver medal in 1972. Her son, Helge Meeuw, also competed in swimming, for unified Germany, in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and won a silver medal in 2012.<ref name=sref/>
