The river runs for approximately {{convert|509|km}}.
Its source is located at Ojuelos de Valdeminguete, in the municipality of Tragacete, province of Cuenca,<ref>{{Cite journal|title=Régimenes natural y artificial del río Júcar|first=Antonio|last=Gil Olcina|doi=10.14198/INGEO2006.40.01|location=San Vicente del Raspeig|publisher=Universidad de Alicante|url=https://rua.ua.es/dspace/bitstream/10045/3251/3/IG_40_01.pdf|page=7|journal=Investigaciones Geográficas|issue=40|year=2006|issn=0213-4691}}</ref> on the eastern flank of the Montes Universales in the Sistema Ibérico. The Júcar River flows first southward and then eastward through the towns of Cuenca, Alcalá del Júcar, Cofrentes, Alzira, Sueca, Alarcón and Cullera, a town located near its mouth into the Gulf of Valencia in the Mediterranean Sea. It crosses the provinces of Cuenca, Albacete and Valencia. On the mid-course of the river, it is impounded by the Cortes-La Muela Reservoir near Cortes de Pallás.
In 1982, the river Júcar broke the Tous Dam, causing the biggest flood in Spanish history, with a flow speed of {{convert|16,000|m3/s}}, killing more than 30 people. This flood was the most important one in the whole history of Spain because, at that time, the people had thought that the Tous Dam was indestructible. The flood was called ''La pantanada de Tous'' (which, in English, would translate something like: ''The Swamp'' ''of Tous'').
