Born in Argentina, Iturbe represented the Paraguay national team in a friendly match in 2009. However, in early 2016 Iturbe expressed his desire to once again represent Paraguay, his parents' country of origin.<ref name="dinocappelli">{{cite web|url=http://www.marca.com/futbol/resto-america/2016/02/29/56d46bb9ca4741434b8b45a1.html|title=Juan Manuel Iturbe le da el sí a Paraguay|author=Dino Cappelli|date=29 February 2016|work=Marca.com}}</ref><ref name="paraguay.com">{{cite web|url=http://d10.paraguay.com/juan-manuel-iturbe-decide-vestir-la-camiseta-albirroja-n630561 |title=Juan Manuel Iturbe decide vestir la camiseta albirroja | Selección Paraguaya |website=D10.paraguay.com |access-date=6 July 2017}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.conmebol.com/en/03072016-2145/world-cup-qualifying-juan-manuel-iturbe-will-play-paraguay|title=World Cup qualifying: Juan Manuel Iturbe will play for Paraguay|date=7 March 2016|access-date=31 May 2016|publisher=Conmebol}}</ref>

===Cerro Porteño=== Iturbe debuted for Cerro Porteño on 28 June 2009 at the age of 16 in a game against Libertad, the 21st week of the Paraguayan Primera División.
Being 12 years of age, Iturbe was not under professional contract with Cerro Porteño,<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.lanacion.com.py/noticias-317895.htm |title=Ningún club de Europa paga un peso por un amateur |newspaper=La Nación (Paraguay) |language=es |access-date=9 August 2010 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100729000654/http://www.lanacion.com.py/noticias-317895.htm |archive-date=29 July 2010 }}</ref> therefore, he trained with Quilmes of the Argentine Primera División.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.ultimahora.com/notas/345029-Iturbe-se-presento-y-entreno-en-Quilmes:-Con-mucha-humildad-vengo-a-esforzarme-y-a-jugar |title=Iturbe se presentó y entrenó en Quilmes: "Con mucha humildad vengo a esforzarme y a jugar" |newspaper=Última Hora |language=es |date=2 August 2010 |access-date=9 August 2010 |archive-date=14 March 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120314015934/http://www.ultimahora.com/notas/345029-Iturbe-se-presento-y-entreno-en-Quilmes:-Con-mucha-humildad-vengo-a-esforzarme-y-a-jugar |url-status=dead }}</ref> In January 2011, Iturbe confirmed he was signing with Portuguese club Porto and would join the team when he turned 18.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.maisfutebol.iol.pt/fcporto/iturbe-fc-porto-porto-liga-futebol-maisfutebol/1229202-1304.html |title=É a melhor notícia deste início de 2011 |newspaper=Mais Futebol (Portugal) |language=pt |access-date=28 January 2011 |archive-date=2 November 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141102062129/http://www.maisfutebol.iol.pt/fcporto/iturbe-fc-porto-porto-liga-futebol-maisfutebol/1229202-1304.html |url-status=dead }}</ref> After agreeing on the move, he returned to Cerro Porteño in February, where he remained until his 18th birthday in June. ===Porto=== On 10 December 2011, Iturbe made his debut for Porto, coming in added time in place of Hulk in a 2–1 Primeira Liga win at Beira-Mar, the first of four appearances off the bench in a title-winning season. On 3 November 2012, he scored his only goal in Portugal, the only goal of the reserves' home win over their Marítimo equivalents.
It was confirmed on 29 December 2012 that Iturbe had joined River Plate on a six-month loan.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.eluniverso.com/2012/12/29/1/1372/juan-manuel-iturbe-ficha-river-plate-seis-meses.html |title=Juan Manuel Iturbe ficha para River Plate por seis meses - Fútbol - Deportes |language=es |publisher=El Universo |date=29 December 2012 |access-date=27 December 2015}}</ref>
===Hellas Verona=== His impressive spell with River Plate helped Iturbe secure an initial loan move to Serie A club Hellas Verona where he thrived during the 2013–14 season, so much so he was signed permanently from Porto for €15 million in May 2014.<ref>{{cite news|last=Carminati|first=Nadia|date=3 September 2013|title=Hellas Verona sign Porto winger Juan Manuel Iturbe on season-long loan|publisher=Sky Sports|url=http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/29145/8904312/OSFP-sign-porto-winger-juan-manuel-iturbe-on-season-long-loan|access-date=13 May 2014}}</ref> Iturbe contributed eight goals and four assists to the newly promoted club, helping them to a 10th-place finish.
===Roma=== On 16 July 2014, just weeks after signing permanently for Verona, Serie A giants Roma announced the signing of Iturbe for €22 million with performance-based add-ons up to €2.5 million.<ref name=Roma>{{cite web|url=http://www.asroma.it/pdf/2014_07_16_iturbe.pdf|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140724203933/http://www.asroma.it/pdf/2014_07_16_iturbe.pdf|archive-date=24 July 2014|title=OPERAZIONI DI MERCATO JUAN MANUEL ITURBE AREVALOS|trans-title=Market Operation: Juan Manuel Iturbe Arévalos|date=16 July 2014|access-date=8 January 2016|publisher=A.S. He also scored against Juventus and a vital goal in the ''Derby della Capitale'' against Lazio, which helped Roma to stay in second position and gave Roma a direct start in the Champions League in the next year.
====AFC Bournemouth (loan)==== On 1 January 2016, Iturbe joined Premier League side AFC Bournemouth on loan for the remainder of the 2015–16 season, making just two appearances.<ref>{{cite news|title=Juan Iturbe: Bournemouth sign Roma forward on loan until May|work=BBC Sport |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35210497|access-date=1 January 2016}}</ref>

==International career== Having spent most of his life in Paraguay, Iturbe began his international career in the youth setup of Paraguay. ==Style of play== The media once dubbed Iturbe the "new Lionel Messi", given their many similarities: like Messi, Iturbe possesses a low centre of gravity, significant speed, and excellent close control, and has been described as "a left-footed, technically gifted Argentine – but nowadays representing Paraguay – forward of diminutive stature who is agile and quick on the ball and who possesses an eye for goal."<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.goal.com/en/news/11/transfer-zone/2011/06/15/2534006/new-messi-juan-manuel-iturbe-to-sign-for-porto-this-week|title='New Messi' Juan Manuel Iturbe|access-date=15 June 2011|publisher=goal.com}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1004605-fc-barcelona-5-footballers-who-have-been-dubbed-the-next-lionel-messi/page/3|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120112030633/http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1004605-fc-barcelona-5-footballers-who-have-been-dubbed-the-next-lionel-messi/page/3|url-status=dead|archive-date=12 January 2012|title=Footballers Who Have Been Dubbed the Next Lionel Messi – Juan Manuel Iturbe|access-date=6 January 2012|publisher=Bleacher Report}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/juan-manuel-iturbe-lives-up-to-his-nickname-with-a-lionel-messi-esque-goal-for-porto-v-celta-vigo/|title=Juan Manuel Iturbe lives up to his nickname with a Lionel Messi-esque goal|access-date=22 July 2012|publisher=101 Great goals|archive-date=1 February 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140201172803/http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/juan-manuel-iturbe-lives-up-to-his-nickname-with-a-lionel-messi-esque-goal-for-porto-v-celta-vigo/|url-status=dead}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.goal.com/en/news/1717/editorial/2011/03/09/2386022/everything-you-need-to-know-about-argentine-wonderkid-juan |title=Everything You Need To Know About Argentine Wonderkid Juan Iturbe |publisher=www.goal.com |last1=Edwards |first1=Daniel |date=9 March 2011 |access-date=22 June 2021 }}</ref> A versatile, well-rounded, and creative attacking player, who is known for his ability to link up the midfield with the attack, he is capable of playing as a winger on either flank, in the centre as an attacking midfielder, or as a second striker, although his preferred role is as an outside forward on the right side of the pitch.
