His past clubs include Independiente Medellín (Colombia), Peñarol (Uruguay), Colo-Colo (Chile), Atlético Paranaense (Brazil) and Mineros de Guayana (Venezuela). In June 2010, Serna returned to former club Envigado after his contract with Brazilian side Atlético Paranaense had been rescinded.
