==Early life== Charney earned his BA in 1965 from New York University. ==Career== Charney joined the faculty of Vanderbilt Law School in 1972.<ref name=loftis/>

In addition to his academic career, he was a member of the US delegation which negotiated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982.<ref name=loftis/> Charney was a member of the US delegation at the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOSIII); and he served on the US Advisory Committee on the Law of the Sea.<ref name="ajil_obit"/>
