Jones-Bateman was born at St Pancras, London. He was educated at Winchester College<ref name="WIS">{{cite web|url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/236084.html|title=Wisden - Obituaries in 1911|publisher=Wisden Cricketers' Almanack|accessdate=7 November 2013}}</ref> and later attended Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he studied theology.<ref name="OBIT">{{cite news|title=THE REV. JONES-BATEMAN|date=31 December 1910|work=The Times|location=London|page=13}}</ref> While studying he played a single first-class cricket match for Cambridge University against Oxford University at the Magdalen Ground in 1848.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/37/37120/First-Class_Matches.html|title=First-Class Matches played by John Jones-Bateman|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=7 November 2013}}</ref> In a match which won by Oxford University by 23 runs, Jones-Bateman was dismissed for ducks in both innings, being dismissed in Cambridge University's first-innings by Charles Willis, while in their second he was dismissed by Gerald Yonge.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/0/821.html|title=Oxford University v Cambridge University, 1848|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=7 November 2013}}</ref> His brother Rowland Jones-Bateman played for Oxford University in this match.<ref name="WIS"/> After his degree ended in 1848, he was ordained as a deacon and priest.<ref name="OBIT"/> In 1849 he was nominated by a private patron to the rectory of Sheldon, Warwickshire, a position he held for 61 years.<ref name="OBIT"/> He died at Sheldon on 29 December 1910.
