==Naval career== Hamilton joined the Royal Navy in 1924,<ref name=lh>{{cite web |url=http://www.kingscollections.org/catalogues/lhcma/collection/h/ha32-001 |title=Hamilton, Adm. Hamilton served in the Second World War on the staff of Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham in the Mediterranean Fleet and was then Gunnery Officer on the battleship {{HMS|Warspite|03|6}} in South East Asia.<ref name=lh/> He also carried out the planning of the Naval Fire Support for the Normandy landings.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.aim25.ac.uk/cgi-bin/vcdf/detail?coll_id=8830&inst_id=21&nv1=browse&nv2=corp |title=Hamilton, Adm. After the war, Hamilton commanded {{HMS|Alacrity|U60|6}}, and was promoted to captain on 30 Jun 1949,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=38658|page=3300| date=5 July 1949}}</ref> before becoming deputy director of Radio Equipment in 1950.<ref name=lh/> He went on to be commander of the 5th Destroyer Squadron in 1952 and Director of Naval Ordnance at the Admiralty in 1954.<ref name=lh/> He was given command of the cruiser {{HMS|Newfoundland|59|6}} in 1956 and became Naval Secretary in 1958.<ref name=lh/> Then he became Flag Officer (Flotillas) for the Home Fleet in 1960 and Flag Officer, Air (Home) in 1962.<ref name=lh/> His last appointment was as Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet and NATO Commander Allied Forces Mediterranean in 1964.<ref name=lh/> He retired in 1967.<ref name=lh/>
