Garvock, the only son of Maj. In 1863 he took command of the Eusufzye Field Force, a formation which conducted a foray against Hindustani tribesmen in Umbela (now Ambela) in the North West Frontier during what is now known as the Ambela Campaign.<ref>Historical Dictionary of the British Empire Volume 1, Page 32</ref> He was appointed General Officer Commanding Northern District in England in October 1866 and General Officer Commanding Southern District in July 1877.<ref name=commands/>
