He was educated at Purbrook Grammar School and at the University of East Anglia (BA, English and American Literature).<ref>‘GREENWELL, Joseph’, Who's Who 2014, A & C Black, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing plc, 2014</ref> He served as chairman and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover from 2003 to 2005 and Chairman of Ford UK from 2009 to 2013.<ref>{{cite web|title=Ford chairman Joe Greenwell CBE elects to retire: MD Mark Ovenden takes on dual role|url=http://www.ford.co.uk/experience-ford/AboutFord/News/CompanyNews/2013/Joe-Greenwell-CBE|website=Ford of Britain|access-date=19 October 2014}}</ref> He was appointed a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours 2011.

In June 2013 he was appointed head of the UK's Automotive Investment Organisation,<ref>{{cite web|title=Joe Greenwell to Lead Automotive Investment Organisation|url=https://www.gov.uk/government/news/joe-greenwell-to-lead-automotive-investment-organisation|access-date=10 January 2018}}</ref> a position he held until 2015.
