==Playing career== Waite was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec. As a youth, he played in the 1981 and 1982 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a minor ice hockey team from Sherbrooke.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.publicationsports.com/ressources/files/439/Joueurs_Pro.pdf|title=Pee-Wee players who have reached NHL or WHA|year=2018|website=Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament|access-date=2019-01-17|archive-date=2019-03-06|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190306085544/https://www.publicationsports.com/ressources/files/439/Joueurs_Pro.pdf|url-status=dead}}</ref>

Waite was one of the highest-rated goalies in the late 1980s and many scouts believed he had the potential to become a star.{{Citation needed|date=June 2011}} He was named the best goaltender at the 1988 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and was also named to the tournament all-star team as Canada won the gold medal. He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1987 NHL entry draft; the Blackhawks were already deep in goal with both Ed Belfour and Dominik Hašek (although Hasek could not come to North America without defecting at the time).<ref>[http://www.legendsofhockey.net/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=18403 Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jimmy Waite]</ref> While Waite received the bulk of the starts in the backup role to Belfour for Chicago, with Hasek playing just 25 games in 2 seasons, Waite did not exhibit strong skills and was later sent to the San Jose Sharks, and eventually the Phoenix Coyotes.<ref>[http://www.club-station.de/eishockey/jimmy-waite.html Jimmy Waite - Club Station]</ref> He was named NHL player of the week on November 16, 1998.<ref>{{cite web |title=Coyotes' Waite is Player of the Week |url=http://www.nhl.com/news/nov/111698waite.htm |website=NHL.com |access-date=July 26, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/19991007065135/http://www.nhl.com/news/nov/111698waite.htm |archive-date=October 7, 1999 |date=November 16, 1998}}</ref> After 2001, Waite played the rest of his career in Germany, playing six years for ERC Ingolstadt in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga<ref>[http://www.donaukurier.de/sport/eishockey/ercingolstadt/berichte/Jimmy-Waite-Meine-ganze-Familie-ist-enttaeuscht;art2619,2035189 Jimmy Waite: "Meine ganze Familie ist enttäuscht"]</ref> and signed in January 2010 with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers.<ref>[http://www.icetigers.de/ICETIGERS/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=448:portraet-jimmy-waite&catid=63 Porträt Jimmy Waite: Zum Abschluss seiner Karriere will er Eishockey nochmal genießen]</ref>
