Sablan ran as a Republican candidate for governor in the 2001 gubernatorial election.<ref name=cp>{{cite news|first=Samuel F.|last=McPhetres|title=Northern Mariana Islands (year in review |url=http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/contemporary_pacific/v015/15.1mcphetres.html |work=Contemporary Pacific|year=2003 |access-date=2010-09-11}}</ref> However, he was defeated in the Republican primary election by Juan Babauta, who went on to win the general election in November 2001.<ref name=cp/> Though some observers expected Sablan to pursue a campaign for governor as an independent or a write-in candidate, Sablan ultimately withdrew from the race after the Republican primary.<ref name=cp/>
