Yonnel was born in Bucharest, Romania as Jean-Estève Schachmann<ref name="bnf">{{cite web|url=http://data.bnf.fr/14653814/jean_yonnel/|website=data.bnf.fr|title=Jean Yonnel (1891-1968)|access-date=28 May 2023}}</ref> and began his film career in France in the 1910s.
