== Background ==

Zada was born in California and moved to Hawaii when he was 10 years old.<ref name="Adweek"/> His interest in video and computers started when he was a young boy. Zada currently lives in Mill Valley, California, with his wife and children.<ref name="Adweek"/>

== Career ==

In 2000, Zada and partner Daniel Stein co-founded the San Francisco-based digital advertising agency Evolution Bureau (EVB). The company's growth as a full-service agency allowed him, as the firm's Executive Creative Director,<ref name="ClickZ">{{cite news|last=Nelson|first=Matthew G.|title=Dancing Elf Video Site Back for a Second Year|url=http://www.clickz.com/clickz/news/1701853/dancing-elf-video-site-back-second-year|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141030223801/http://www.clickz.com/clickz/news/1701853/dancing-elf-video-site-back-second-year|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 30, 2014|access-date=May 29, 2012|newspaper=ClickZ|date=November 26, 2007}}</ref> to direct advertising campaigns for clients for television and the internet. In 2006, Omnicom Group bought a 50% interest in the firm.<ref name="Adweek"/> By 2008, EVB had grown to a 65-person company and Zada allowed Omnicom to acquire a majority stake in the company, and at the end of 2008, Zada left the company to pursue a career as a video and film director.<ref name="Creativity">{{cite news|last=Aditham|first=Kiran|title=Jason Zada Leaves EVB|url=http://creativity-online.com/news/jason-zada-leaves-evb/130544|access-date=May 29, 2012|newspaper=Creativity Magazine|date=August 26, 2008|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131017064513/http://creativity-online.com/news/jason-zada-leaves-evb/130544|archive-date=October 17, 2013|url-status=dead}}</ref> Zada signed with film production company Tool of Northern America (TNA)<ref name="Trust Collective">{{cite web|title=Tool Signs Award-Winning Director Jason Zada|url=http://trustcollective.com/portfolio/content/tool_zada.htm|publisher=Trust Collective|access-date=May 29, 2012|archive-date=November 4, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121104162922/http://trustcollective.com/portfolio/content/tool_zada.htm|url-status=dead}}</ref> in January 2009 and commutes between his Mill Valley home and Los Angeles.<ref>{{cite web|last=Zada|first=Jason|title=Jason Zada|url=http://www.jasonzada.com/bio.html|publisher=jasonzada.com|access-date=14 March 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120426194750/http://www.jasonzada.com/bio.html|archive-date=April 26, 2012|url-status=dead}}</ref>

In 2024 Zada founded Secret Level, an AI video production studio. For the holiday seasons of 2024 and 2025 Secret Level worked with Coca-Cola to generate their Christmas advertisements, which called back to the original 1995 "Holidays are Coming" ads. In response to social media backlash surrounding these videos, Zada defended the use of AI in Coke's ads, saying "A lot of the people complaining last year were from the creative industry who were just afraid — afraid for their jobs, afraid for what it did. But I think the spot tested really well and average people really enjoyed it."<ref>https://www.mensjournal.com/news/coca-cola-ai-christmas-ad-commercial-backlash-creator-response</ref>

== Projects ==

In 2006, Zada and Evolution Bureau, in collaboration with advertising company "Toy<big>'''.'''</big>" of New York,<ref name="ClickZ"/><ref name="Adweek"/> developed the ''Elf Yourself'' interactive holiday viral marketing campaign for OfficeMax. The ''Elf Yourself'' interactive website allows visitors to upload pictures of themselves, or their friends, which they can then see on the dancing elfs.<ref name=Bostonist>{{cite news|last=Roberts |first=Caroline |title=Go Elf Yourself! |url=http://bostonist.com/2006/12/24/go_elf_yourself.php |access-date=May 29, 2012 |newspaper=Bostonist |date=December 24, 2006 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151103170955/http://bostonist.com/2006/12/24/go_elf_yourself.php |archive-date=November 3, 2015 }}</ref> Originally with only one elf, the campaign was first used during the holiday season, beginning in November 2006,<ref name="ClickZ"/> and returned each holiday season afterwards. In 2011, Zada wrote and directed ''Take This Lollipop'' as both an interactive horror short film and a Facebook application, using the Facebook Connect app to allow viewers to bring themselves into the film using pictures and messages from their own Facebook profile.<ref name="Indiewire 10-20-11"/><ref name="Sydney Morning Herald 10-21-11">{{cite news|last=Grubb|first=Ben|title=Facebook 'horror movie' cyber-stalk alarm|url=http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/5824501/Facebook-horror-movie-cyber-stalk-alarm|access-date=May 29, 2012|newspaper=The Sydney Morning Herald|date=October 21, 2011}}</ref> Originally intended as a social experiment, Zada admits he "threw the script together"<ref name="Mashable"/> in approximately 30 minutes, and completed the project in four weeks along with developer Jason Nickel and the collaborative efforts of Tool of North America.<ref name="Mashable"/> In November, 2011, "Take This Lollipop" was noted as the fastest-growing Facebook application.<ref name="Mashable">{{cite news|last=Erickson|first=Christine|title=World's Fastest-Growing Facebook App Will Scare the Crap Out of You|url=https://mashable.com/2011/11/11/take-this-lolipop/|access-date=May 29, 2012|newspaper=Mashable|date=November 11, 2011}}</ref><ref name=AllFacebook>{{cite web|last=Ward|first=Brian|title=Facebook's Fastest Growing App Is Take This Lollipop|url=http://allfacebook.com/facebook-apps-growing-fastest_b66116|work=November 9, 2011|publisher=allfacebook.com|access-date=May 29, 2012}}</ref>

Zada TNA worked with Australia's Tourism Victoria and directed the crowdfunded "Remote Control Tourist" which, over a five-day period in October 2013, allowed potential Melbourne visitors to virtually explore the city using social media.<ref name="Ad Age 10-9-14">{{cite news|last1=staff|title=Ask 'Remote Control' Explorers to Check Out Melbourne for You|url=https://adage.com/article/creativity-pick-of-the-day/remote-control-tourists-check-melbourne/244657/|access-date=October 30, 2014|publisher=Ad Age|date=October 9, 2013}}</ref> Zada stated "Hundreds of photos, videos, and data will come to life and give anyone who is thinking of visiting or is currently visiting Melbourne the coolest and most interesting way to research and explore the city."<ref name="Fast Company 10-9-13">{{cite news|last1=Champagne|first1=Christine|title=Experience Melbourne From Your Couch Through These Remote Control Tourists|url=http://www.fastcocreate.com/3019660/experience-melbourne-from-your-couch-through-these-remote-control-tourists|access-date=October 30, 2014|publisher=Fast Company|date=October 9, 2013}}</ref>

== Recognition ==

In speaking toward ''Elf Yourself'' in his book ''Adland: Searching for the Meaning of Life on a Branded Planet'', author James P. Othmer called it "a strange, corny, yet enormously successful website."<ref name="Adland"/> He observed that while 19 other sites created for OfficeMax had modest success, it was "nothing like the level of action that came out of the Elf Yourself site,"<ref name="Adland"/> and that, as created by Zada, the site "not only transcended the online genre; it transcended advertising and became the kind of cultural event that marketers dream of". <ref name="Adland">{{cite book|last=Othmer|first=James P.|title=Adland |volume=48, Developments in biological standardization|year=2009|publisher=Random House Digital, Inc.|isbn=978-0385524964|pages=243–250|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=mxlqaqRhUvwC&q=%22Elf+Yourself%22&pg=PA247}}</ref>
