=== Early life === Sullivan was born on July 23, 1929, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Stephen and Dorothy (née Bernier) Sullivan.<ref name="obituary">{{cite news|date=June 2006|work=New Earth|title=Bishop James S. In July 2021, the Diocese of Lansing announced that several sexual abuse allegations against Sullivan were credible.
