It is visible to the naked eye with an [[apparent visual magnitude]] of 3.54.<ref name=apjs15/> Based upon an annual [[stellar parallax|parallax shift]] of 9.65 [[milliarcsecond|mas]] as seen from Earth, it is located around 338 [[light year]]s from the [[Sun]]. At that distance, the visual magnitude of the star is diminished by an [[extinction (astronomy)|extinction factor]] of 0.23 due to [[interstellar dust]].<ref name=Gontcharov2012/> Relative to its neighbors, this star has a [[peculiar velocity]] of {{Val|27.4|4.9|u=km/s}}.<ref name=Tetzlaff2011/> It appears to be a member of the [[Scorpius–Centaurus association|Scorpio-Centaurus OB association]].<ref name=deGeus1989/>
This star has the [[spectrum]] of a [[B-type star|B-type]] [[subgiant star]] with a [[stellar classification]] of B2.5 IV,<ref name=Hiltner1969/> which may indicate that it has used up its [[stellar core|core]] supply of [[hydrogen]] and has begun to expand off the [[main-sequence]]. It is rotating rapidly with a [[projected rotational velocity]] of 370 km/s.<ref name=UesugiFukuda70/> This is giving the star an [[Oblate spheroid|oblate]] shape with an [[equatorial bulge]] that is an estimated 12% larger than the polar radius.<ref name=belle2012/> It is about 20<ref name=Tetzlaff2011/> million years old with 6.9<ref name=Tetzlaff2011/> times the [[solar mass|mass of the Sun]] and 4<ref name=Fitzpatrick2005/> times the Sun's radius.
