The '''International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy''' ('''IAGA''') is an international scientific association that focuses on the study of terrestrial and planetary magnetism and space physics.

IAGA is one of the eight associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. It is a non-governmental body funded through the subscriptions paid to IUGG by its member countries.<ref name="About IAGA">{{cite web |url=http://www.iaga-aiga.org |title=About IAGA |publisher=International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics |accessdate=6 July 2016 }}</ref> IAGA have been responsible for developing and maintaining the International Geomagnetic Reference Field, a reference for the magnetic field of the Earth that was adopted in 1968 and is updated every five years.<ref name="Lastovicka2009">{{cite book|last=Lastovicka|first=Jan|title=GEOPHYSICS AND GEOCHEMISTRY – Volume II|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Lr6cDAAAQBAJ&pg=PA188|year=2009|publisher=EOLSS Publications|isbn=978-1-84826-246-1|page=188}}</ref> The most recent version is IGRF-12.<ref name="IGRF-12_paper">{{cite journal | bibcode=2015EP&S...67...79T | first1=Erwan | first10=Laura | first11=Elisabeth | first12=Aude | first13=Arnaud | first14=Pierdavide | first15=François | first16=Aimin | first17=Alexandre | first18=Isabelle | first19=Nicolas | first20=Brian | first21=Mohamed | first22=Gauthier | first23=Thomas | first24=Monika | first25=Weijia | first26=Xavier | first27=Benoit | first28=Jean-Michel | first29=Vincent | first30=Frank J | first31=Susan | first32=Mioara | first33=Chandrasekharan | first34=Stefan | first35=Nils | first36=Valeriy | first37=Victoria | first38=Martin | first39=Terence J | first40=Diana | first41=Reyko | first42=Olivier | first43=Andrew | first44=Alan | first45=Lars | first46=Pierre | first47=Ingo | first48=Tatiana | last1=Thébault | last10=Brocco | last11=Canet | last12=Chambodut | last13=Chulliat | last14=Coïsson | last15=Civet | last16=Du | last17=Fournier | last18=Fratter | last19=Gillet | last2=Finlay | first2=Christopher C | last20=Hamilton | last21=Hamoudi | last22=Hulot | last23=Jager | last24=Korte | last25=Kuang | last26=Lalanne | last27=Langlais | last28=Léger | last29=Lesur | last3=Beggan | first3=Ciarán D | last30=Lowes | last31=Macmillan | last32=Mandea | last33=Manoj | last34=Maus | last35=Olsen | last36=Petrov | last37=Ridley | last38=Rother | last39=Sabaka | last4=Alken | first4=Patrick | last40=Saturnino | last41=Schachtschneider | last42=Sirol | last43=Tangborn | last44=Thomson | last45=Tøffner-Clausen | last46=Vigneron | last47=Wardinski | last48=Zvereva | title=International Geomagnetic Reference Field: the 12th generation | date=27 May 2015 | last5=Aubert | first5=Julien | last6=Barrois | first6=Olivier | last7=Bertrand | first7=Francois | last8=Bondar | first8=Tatiana | last9=Boness | first9=Axel | journal=Earth, Planets and Space | volume=67 | issue=1 | pages=79 | doi=10.1186/s40623-015-0228-9 | display-authors=3| doi-access=free }}</ref>

== History == IAGA has a long history and can trace its origins to the Commission for Terrestrial Magnetism and Atmospheric Electricity, part of the World Meteorological Organization originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), which was founded in 1873. At the First IUGG General Assembly (Rome, 1922), the Section de Magnétisme et Electricité Terrestres became one of the constituent sections of the Union. At the IV IUGG General Assembly (Stockholm, 1930), it became the International Association of Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity. It took its present name at the X IUGG General Assembly (Rome, 1954).<ref>{{cite book |last=Gubbins |first1=David |last2=Herrero-Bervera |first2=Emilio |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=O-wA0ocxAiIC&pg=PA407 |title=Encyclopedia of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism |work=Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences Series |publisher=Springer Science & Business Media |date=19 July 2007 |pages=407–408 |isbn=978-1-4020-4423-6 |accessdate=6 July 2016 }}</ref>
