'''Hylestad''' is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county, Norway. The {{convert|540|km2|adj=on}} municipality existed from 1915 until its dissolution in 1962. The area is now part of Valle Municipality in the traditional district of Setesdal in Agder county. Hylestad Municipality was the 702nd most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about {{formatnum:661}}. ===Name=== The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old ''Hylestad'' farm ({{langx|non|Hyljastaðir}}) since the first Hylestad Church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the word {{wikt-lang|non|hylr}} which means "deep place" or "pool in a river". ==Geography== The highest point in the municipality was the {{convert|1302|m|adj=on}} tall mountain Beinleinuten, located in the Setesdalsheiene mountains just east of the lake Rosskreppfjorden in the western part of the municipality.<ref name="elev" /> The river Otra flowed through the central part of the municipality. Valle Municipality was located to the north, Fyresdal Municipality was located to the east (in Telemark county), Bygland Municipality was located to the south, and Sirdal Municipality was located to the west (in Vest-Agder county).

==Government== While it existed, Hylestad Municipality was responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services, senior citizen services, welfare and other social services, zoning, economic development, and municipal roads and utilities. The municipality was governed by a municipal council of directly elected representatives.
