The cap is {{Convert|1.5-4|cm|frac=4}} wide and tan–orange, with whitish areas. The teeth are {{Convert|2-6|mm|frac=8}} long. The stem is {{Convert|2-5|cm|abbr=on|frac=4}} long and {{Convert|5-10|mm|abbr=on|frac=8}} thick. The flesh is whitish. Other lookalikes include ''Mycorphapium adustum'' and species of ''Hydnellum'' and ''Phellodon''.<ref name=":02" />

It is found near the west coast of North America, where it grows from November to March under conifer and tan oak trees. It is edible.<ref name=":02" />
