== History ==

The Foundation was initially established in Berlin in 1860 to support German scientists conducting research abroad.<ref>{{Cite web|title=History|url=https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/explore/about-the-humboldt-foundation/history|access-date=2022-01-31|website=humboldt-foundation.de|archive-date=2020-06-12|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200612180558/https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/web/history.html|url-status=live}}</ref> It was named after the polymath Alexander von Humboldt. In 1923, during the hyperinflation, the Foundation ceased operations due to capital constraints. It was re-established in 1925 with a new goal: to attract talented, pro-German students from other countries to study and research in Germany.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Klagenfurt |first=Johannes |date=2013 |title=Rezension von: Die Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung und das Ausländerstudium in Deutschland 1925-1945 |url=https://www.sehepunkte.de/2013/10/22144.html |access-date=2024-08-27 |journal=sehepunkte |volume=13 |number=10 |language=de}}</ref> Following the fall of Germany in 1945, the Foundation closed for a second time. It was re-established in Bonn-Bad Godesberg on December 10, 1953, under the leadership of physicist Werner Heisenberg, with a new mission: "to grant fellowships to academics of foreign nationality, without regard to gender, race, religion, or ideology, to enable them to continue their academic training by a study-visit to Germany".<ref>{{cite web |title=Alexander von Humboldt Foundation |url=https://studycor.com/organizations/funding/alexander-von-humboldt-foundation/ |website=Studycor |access-date=1 September 2018 |archive-date=1 September 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180901145631/https://studycor.com/organizations/funding/alexander-von-humboldt-foundation/ |url-status=live }}</ref> In 2016, the Foundation helped establish the German Section of the Scholars at Risk (SAR) network, a group of research institutions, universities, and science organizations committed to supporting at-risk academics and promoting academic freedom.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/web/press-release-2016-21.html|title=Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation - 21 - German Universities unite to provide more support for threatened researchers|website=humboldt-foundation.de|access-date=2016-09-23|archive-date=2018-02-20|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180220151835/https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/web/press-release-2016-21.html|url-status=dead}}</ref>
