After failing to establish himself at Porto, being loaned several times during his contract, he made a name for himself in Germany with Werder Bremen where he remained for four seasons, reaching the 2009 UEFA Cup final and scoring 63 competitive goals. He also spent several years in Turkey with Beşiktaş, netting 47 times in 109 total games.

Almeida, whose international career with Portugal spanned over a decade, succeeded in becoming a regular after the departures of Pauleta in 2006 and Liédson in 2010. He represented the nation at two World Cups and as many European Championships, earning 57 caps and scoring 19 goals.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.rsssf.org/miscellaneous/port-recintlp.html|title=Portugal – Record International Players|publisher=RSSSF|first=José Luis|last=Pierrend|access-date=27 April 2017}}</ref>

Almeida started working as a head coach in 2024, being in charge of Sepahan in Iran and Hatayspor in Turkey.

==Club career== ===Portugal=== Born in Figueira da Foz, Coimbra District, Almeida started playing football for hometown club Naval 1º de Maio, before being signed by Porto still as a junior. He made his Primeira Liga debut in a 2–0 home win over Benfica on 21 September 2003, playing three minutes.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-betclic/benfica/detalhe/fc-porto-benfica-2-0-derlei-30-argel-npb-53|title=FC Porto-Benfica, 2–0 (Derlei 30', Argel [npb] 53')|trans-title=FC Porto-Benfica, 2–0 (Derlei 30', Argel [og] 53')|newspaper=Record|language=pt|date=21 September 2003|access-date=3 April 2025}}</ref> Unable to settle at first, however, he had loan spells with União de Leiria (with which he had already played in the previous season, also on loan)<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-betclic/fc-porto/detalhe/mercado-de-leiria-abastece-o-campeao|title=Mercado de Leiria abastece o campeão|trans-title=Leiria market provides for the champions|newspaper=Record|language=pt|date=7 February 2004|access-date=3 April 2025}}</ref> and Boavista.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-betclic/fc-porto/detalhe/hugo-almeida-e-do-boavista|title=Hugo Almeida é do Boavista|trans-title=Hugo Almeida belongs to Boavista|newspaper=Record|language=pt|date=8 January 2005|access-date=3 April 2025}}</ref>

Almeida returned to Porto for 2005–06, having a relatively important role in a side that was crowned national champions. During that campaign's UEFA Champions League he scored a spectacular goal from a 35-metre free kick against Inter Milan at the San Siro, albeit in a 2–1 loss.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/01af-0e6d2015e048-adc48d9c0112-1000--cruz-control-revives-inter/|title=Cruz control revives Inter|publisher=UEFA|first=Adam|last=Szreter|date=1 November 2005|access-date=3 April 2025}}</ref>

Almeida started 2010–11 netting six times in the first ten league games. ==International career== [[File:Hugo Almeida – Portugal vs. Argentina, 9th February 2011 (1).jpg|thumb|Almeida playing for Portugal in 2011]] Almeida played at every level in international competitions, from the under-16 to the main Portugal national team. He made his full debut in a friendly against England on 18 February 2004, a 1–1 draw,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.uefa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=257224.html|title=Scolari gives youth a chance|publisher=UEFA|date=12 November 2004|access-date=9 January 2010|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130205040208/http://www.uefa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=257224.html|archive-date=5 February 2013}}</ref> and was also part of the squad that won the 2003 Toulon Tournament, also appearing at the 2004 and 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.uefa.com/under21/news/0257-0de6a299363d-178ac42f5077-1000--pride-of-porto-and-portugal/|title=Pride of Porto and Portugal|publisher=UEFA|date=22 May 2006|access-date=9 January 2010}}</ref>

Almeida was called for Portugal's final three UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers, starting against Azerbaijan and scoring his first international goal.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.record.pt/internacional/competicoes-de-selecoes/detalhe/azerbaijao-portugal-0-2-bruno-alves-11-hugo-almeida-451.html|title=Azerbaijão-Portugal, 0–2 (Bruno Alves 11; Hugo Almeida 45+1)|trans-title=Azerbaijan-Portugal, 0–2 (Bruno Alves 11; Hugo Almeida 45+1)|newspaper=Record|language=pt|date=13 October 2007|access-date=15 February 2018}}</ref> He also netted in the follow-up, a 1–0 win over Armenia,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/history/news/0254-0d7bad42bd25-da13d812c3e0-1000--almeida-takes-portugal-to-the-brink/|title=Almeida takes Portugal to the brink|publisher=UEFA|date=17 November 2007|access-date=3 April 2025}}</ref> and these goals eventually proved vital as the nation clinched a tournament spot.

In Carlos Queiroz's second stint as national side coach, Almeida scored in a 4–0 victory in Malta on 6 September 2008, in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.publico.pt/2008/09/06/desporto/noticia/portugal-vence-malta-e-avanca-no-apuramento-para-o-mundial-2010-1341860|title=Portugal vence Malta e avança no apuramento para o Mundial 2010|trans-title=Portugal beat Malta and move forward in 2010 World Cup qualification|newspaper=Público|language=pt|date=6 September 2008|access-date=15 February 2018}}</ref> His importance diminished in late 2009, after the naturalisation of Sporting CP's Liédson.

Almeida was picked for the finals in South Africa. After the first match, a 0–0 against Ivory Coast, he replaced Liédson in the starting XI for the following match, with both players finding the net in the 7–0 rout of North Korea on 21 June 2010, in Cape Town.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/22/sports/soccer/22portugalgame.html|title=Portugal pours it on in second half|newspaper=The New York Times|first=Christopher|last=Clarey|date=21 June 2010|access-date=9 November 2012}}</ref>

Almeida was selected by new manager Paulo Bento for his Euro 2012 squad, initially as third choice after Hélder Postiga and Nélson Oliveira.
