==History== [[File:John Speed - Map of Nottingham 1610.gif|thumb|left|John Speed's map of Nottingham of 1610 showing Hungate]] The early name for the street was Hungate and it was referred to as such in 1326<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Holland Walker |first1=J |date=1928 |title=An itinerary of Nottingham |url=http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/tts/tts1930/itinerary1930p4.htm |journal=Transactions of the Thoroton Society |volume=32 |pages=6 |access-date=21 January 2019 }}</ref> and appears in this form on John Speed’s map of Nottingham of 1610.<ref>{{cite news |last=Whitfield |first=David |date=31 December 2018 |title=These are the 35 streets that originally made up Nottingham |url=https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/history/35-streets-originally-made-up-1664361 |work=Nottingham Evening Post |access-date=21 January 2019 }}</ref> It is thought it received this name from being where part of the kennels for Nottingham Castle were situated.

The paving of the street was the responsibility of the inhabitants of the parish of St. Nicholas, and in 1808 the Grand Jury returned a Bill of Indictment for the poor state of the street<ref>{{cite book |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |title=Records of the Borough of Nottingham. Vol 8. 1800-1835 |publisher=Thomas Forman & Sons, Nottingham |page=75 |date=1914 }}</ref> The street was repaired in 1809 at a cost of £60 ({{Inflation|UK|60|1809|r=0|fmt=eq|cursign=£}}).{{Inflation-fn|UK}}

The street was bisected in 1958 by the construction of Maid Marian Way, resulting in the loss of several fine properties.
