Sever became the senior proctor at Merton College, Oxford in 1427. Sever was the chaplain and almoner of King Henry VI.<ref name="cdnb">{{cite book | title=The Concise Dictionary of National Biography | chapter=Henry Sever | volume=III: N–Z |publisher=Oxford University Press | year=1992 |page=2698 }}</ref> He was also the first Provost (head school governor) of Eton College, from 1440 to 1442.<ref name="clark">{{cite book | title=Of Mice and Men: Image, Belief and Regulation in Late Medieval England |chapter-url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ddBhSLy4XaQC&pg=PA130 | chapter=Thomas S.
