==Naval career== Palliser was appointed a Commander in the Royal Navy in 1869.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=23469|page=796|date=16 February 1869}}</ref> In 1882 he was offered a map purporting to show the location on the Cocos Islands of gold and silver looted from the ''Mary Dear'' but, despite looking, he never found anything.<ref>[http://www.detecting.org.uk/html/Treasure_of_Cocos_Island.html Treasure of the Cocos Islands]</ref> Following promotion to captain in 1878,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=24569|page=2394|date=5 April 1878}}</ref> he was given command of HMS ''Victory'' in 1891.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.hms-victory.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48&Itemid=68 |title=HMS Victory - Commanding Officers |access-date=3 October 2010 |archive-date=21 July 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210721081755/http://www.hms-victory.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48&Itemid=68 |url-status=dead }}</ref> He was appointed Commodore-in-Charge, Hong Kong from December 1891 to June 1893. He was buried at Everton Church in Bedfordshire.<ref>The Times, 20 March 1907</ref>
