Lyster was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1886.<ref>Crockford's Clerical Directory 1929/30 p819: Oxford, OUP, 1929</ref> After curacies in Hillsborough, Downpatrick and Dublin he became the incumbent at Enniscorthy in 1895.
