Born in [[Ireland]] (then a part of [[United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland|the U.K.]]), to John and Jane (Henry) Naphen,<ref>{{Citation | first = William Thomas | last = Davis | title = Bench and Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts | page = 191 | publisher = The Boston History Company | location = Boston, MA | year = 1895}}</ref> Naphen immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in [[Lowell, Massachusetts]]. He was educated by private tutors and also attended the public schools. He was graduated from [[Harvard University]] in 1878. He attended the [[Boston University]] Law School. He was [[Admission to the bar in the United States|admitted to the bar]] at Suffolk County in November 1879 and commenced practice in Boston.

===1902 election=== Naphen wanted to run again in 1902 however [[William S. McNary]], chairman of the Democratic State committee wanted the nomination and McNary forced Naphen to retire from the race.
