It is situated around Heide, which is the seat of the ''Amt'', but not part of it. It was formed on 1 January 2008 from the former ''Ämter'' Kirchspielslandgemeinde Heide-Land and Kirchspielslandgemeinde Weddingstedt and the municipality Norderwöhrden.
