The term Chitu is the Chinese word for "red hare" in English.<ref name="autorevi-Н&">{{Cite web|author=Igor Vladimirsky |url=https://autoreview.ru/news/novyy-krossover-haval-chitu-on-zhe-krasnyy-krolik |title=Новый кроссовер Haval Chitu, он же «красный кролик» |work=autoreview.ru |language=ru |date=2021-03-11 |accessdate=2021-04-25}}</ref> This makes the Chitu, after the Big Dog, the second model of the brand to be named after an animal.

== Powertrain == The Haval Chitu was originally powered by a 1.5-litre (1.499 cc) turbocharged petrol direct injection (PDI) ''GW4B15C'' engine for the 2021 model year.<ref name="ChituCN">{{cite web|url=https://m.autohome.com.cn/6048|title=哈弗赤兔|language =Chinese|website=m.autohome.com.cn|access-date=11 June 2024}}</ref> In the late 2021 for the 2022 model year, the PDI engine was replaced by a less powerful 1.5-litre (1.497 cc) turbocharged petrol engine, called ''GW4G15K''.<ref name="ChituCN"/> Both engines are paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission. A hybrid variant was also introduced for the 2022 model year with a combination of 1.5-litre (1.497 cc) naturally aspirated petrol engine (''GW4G15H'') and an electric motor, developing a combined power of {{convert|190|PS|hp kW|0|abbr=on}}<ref>{{Cite web|author=Ivan Mitic |url=https://tekdeeps.com/haval-chitu/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210602214301/https://tekdeeps.com/haval-chitu/|url-status=usurped|archive-date=June 2, 2021|title=Haval Chitu|work=tekdeeps.com|language=en |date=2021-03-15|accessdate=2021-05-29}}</ref> driving the wheels through a 2-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).<ref name="ChituCN"/>

For the 2023 model year, the PDI engine was reintroduced with new code called ''GW4B15L'', available for the higher trims. The lower output turbocharged engine is also received new ''GW4G15M'' code, set for the lower trims.<ref name="ChituCN"/>
