==Biography== Hofmann studied philosophy and law at Heidelberg University, LMU Munich, and the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg under professors such as Ernst Forsthoff, Wolfgang Kunkel, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Karl Löwith. After the ''Staatsexamen'', he became a certified lawyer. He taught at the University of Würzburg from 1976 to 1992, when he became a professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin, eventually serving as Vice-President of the university. From 1989 to 1990, he was a fellow at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study and became a member of the ''{{ill|Vereinigung für Verfassungsgeschichte|de}}''.<ref>{{cite book |last=Neuhaus|first=Helmut|date=2012|title=erfassungsänderungen.
